Couldn't agree more, mimimal is the way to go on any system.

but unfortunately the majority of users I encounter are not satisfied unless they have a task bar full of useless apps stretching from one end of the window to the other and a startup menu larger than the menu at McDonalds

250185 2004-07-08 01:53:00 Hmmm... yes the MoBo does use Edo RAM, dammit. The motherboard is an old Compaq Presario 4170 motherboard... no manual to be seen anywhere...
Anyway, I've seen a K6-2 333 Mhz cpu on Trademe. Now I think I've established that the mobo is not a super socket7, so no chance of running a 333 even?

I've heard of PII overdrives - they're reasonably cheap nowadays off trademe. Maybe I should invest in one of those then?

Thanks you lot - lovely discussion.

This may be a novel concept Kiki: do the other things instead of wasting any time on the computer . :D

A concept that nobody here follows.

250188 2004-07-08 09:17:00 bring a compaq is even worse ;-) not usually very upgradeable.
the problem is the bios needs to have the enties for the particlur cpu otherwise it most likly won't work.

p2 overdrive?? proberly not as your board is p1 not p2 (i think your meaning slockets/slot converters).

it would be cheaper and easier to get a whole motherboard and cpu combo. eg a ss7 mobo and k6-2 would proberly work with your existing hardware.

250189 2004-07-08 11:02:00 Tweak'e is right, looking at Compaq support for the 4170, about the only thing upgradeable is the RAM.... upto a magnificent 128MB maximum :) Terry Porritt (14)
