250174 2004-07-06 06:34:00 It's his mum's computer kiki, and she doesn't want/need warp speed. Not all of us do, I am slowly migrating awau from a P166 to a PIII 550.

Plenty of people only need modest performance, and wouldn't pay $200 for an upgrade they didn't need, let alone $2000, me included. PF1 serves all types of computer users.

Cheers

250176 2004-07-06 08:59:00 really need to know what mobo she has.

k6-2's require a super socket7 as apposed to a socket7. you need compataible voltage AND bios support.

out of interest intel went from socket7 to slot1 (pentium2) with the L2 cache on the daughter board while amd went from socket7 to super socket7 (k6-2) with the L2 cache on the motherboard

250177 2004-07-06 09:53:00 You would need to locate the manual for your motherboard (online if you don't physically have one ) and check the manufacturers specs for compatible cpu's and possible bios flashes. And yes, if possible it would be a worthy upgrade at minimal cost. A 500 amd would be a quantum improvement over a P166 in everyday tasks.
Hell you wouldn't even need a 500, an amd 300 would do the job nicely.
Definitely no mocking, I do this sort of upgrade all the time for love and the price of a cpu (reasonably easy to pick up and amd cpus from 300-500 for 20 bucks) and the smile on their faces when they see there previous clonker ripping along at a faster rate of knots.
Not everyone in the world wants, needs (or can afford) a numbercrunching, raptor of a system.

I pity you . :p Who wants to waste their life waiting around for computers to do a task that should've been done 10secs ago . Eventually it all accumulates into hours and days of your life that could have been better spent doing other things . Wouldn't you like to open Outlook Express 10x faster Billy? ;)

250179 2004-07-06 20:58:00 For being cheeky to Billy, you will be sentenced to 6 months hard labour on a 386 DX33, 120MB HDD and 8MB RAM running Windows 3.1

You will come out of re-hab appreciating the old things :D

One program I wouldn't want to open full stop. After telling someone to up and spend $2000 on a PC and then we find out you use OE.

250181 2004-07-06 23:50:00 Each to his own kiki, I keep my computers lean and mean. I don't use OE either, I use Outlook 2000 and it runs just fine.

My P166 has 256 MB of ram and absolutely nothing running bar the essentials. It has always done everything I needed at no-wait speed except the processing of larger graphics files, which is why I am now migrating to my PIII 550.

That is similarly configured but with 512MB of RAM and again no superfluous programs running in the background. I have no need of heavy-duty multitasking, though I occasionally run one process in the background while working on something else.

No pity needed here. :) I have dollars in the bank not wasted on unnecessary technology. If I don't count my laptop or kids computers I have had 3 desktops over the last 10 years, starting with a 486 DX33 and have spent a total of $5500 on them.

Cheers

Never! I use Thunderbird and Hushmail. Outlook Express was an example, but I see he uses the big brother Outlook 2000 which is just as bad. :O

Well I can see why you don't quite need to upgrade. You have bucketloads of RAM in those things!!
