Ok number 1 I have searched here and Google - nothing.

I have a freind's PC on win98se, conextant modem on com3, connecting to Xtra.
I can dial out and connect and get some bytes sent and recieved after the initial handshake - but then nothing. No movement in bytes received at all via browser or email.

Have removed dialup adaptor and TCPIP and reinstalled.
Have deleted old dial up to xtra connection and done new one.
Have removed and reinstalled dial up networking in add/remove windows components.

Modem testing ok in diagnostics - connecting at 45k.
Any other ideas I should try?

250704 2004-07-08 10:17:00 History?

Did it ever connect?

Have you tried another modem?

250705 2004-07-08 10:53:00 Make sure in Dialup connection/Properties/Server Types that NetBeui and IPX are not ticked.

In ControlPanel/Network remove all protocols except
Client for MS networks
Dialup Adapter
TCP/IP

If still no traffic suspect spyware such as new.net blocking downloads
Check Add remove programs and remove new.net if it is there.
You might also need to do the winsock2 repair.

250706 2004-07-08 11:01:00 Evening,

Can you please try to use the ping command to see if this problem is DNS lookup or deeper.

from a command promt type
1) ping pressf1.co.nz
2) ping 210.48.100.45

250707 2004-07-08 20:18:00 soory guys should have mentioned way past all this in diagnosing.

Only tcpip in the connection

have tried pinging urls or ip addresses get destination host unreachable.

have not tried another modem - don't have one here (gone 10 at work tho!). It feels like a software problem - it does actually connect after all.

Yes it has connected in the past, but now connects but as I say no traffic after that. I did see a page ages ago that mentioned editing the registry to take out winsock and some vxd keys which has worked for me in the past, but can't find that page now.

Will try that winsock fix listed though, thanx

250708 2004-07-09 04:49:00 Hi
Try using the Xtra phone number 087 303032. Had the same prob and this helped. This was some time ago so hopefully the number still works. This number dials into a different modem so I'm told. hth
