250625 2004-07-08 03:12:00 My friend has a 5000 series Compaq Presario with onboard video (AGP slot available) running WinXP. He phoned me this morning with the following problem: The monitor (a Dell) was in low power standby when he turned the PC on. The monitor light glowed green for a second or two then went back to amber. Then nothing at all - the PCdidn't seeme to be making any attempt to load the OS although the PC power light glowed green, there was no dis activity. He disconnected both the monitor and the PC from the mains before trying again - no change.

At lunchtime I went around to his place, turned the PC on, then the monitor and it all fired up perfectly. We shook our heads, had a scratch, he bought me a curry for lunch and I headed back towards work. Before I got back he phoned me again! When he had returned home the PC had frozen completly, he uses the screensaver that displays the time and it had frozend about 10 minutes after we had left his place. Back I went and the PC would respond to nothing. Disconnected then reconnected.... not joy. Pulled out the RAM and PCI card... nothing. Exactly the same symptons as this morning!

Any ideas?

250627 2004-07-08 03:17:00 Do you mean it needs replacing? Do these Compaqs take a standard ATX power supply? POTUS (5276)

Its a strong possibility.

>Do these Compaqs take a standard ATX power supply?

Depends on the model but probally not.

Just one of the joys of buying a brand name system,Not only do they run like dogs, report home on a constant basis but the sting in the tail is the cost of fixing them when out of warrenty.

250629 2004-07-08 04:03:00 A similar thing happened to my computer about a week ago. For some reason, but turning the PC off at the wall, and physically unplugging and replugging the power cord (at the computer end) seemed to fix it. This probably doesn't help you though.

The fact that the green power light comes on indicates that the PSU is working, or at least partially working. Do the fans in the computer all power up etc.? Are there any LEDs on the motherboard which light up (or don't light up)?

250630 2004-07-08 04:27:00 The PC lightsup on the front andthe cpu fan works. The drives spin up too. But that's about all. POTUS (5276)
250631 2004-07-08 05:44:00 I'm not 100% sure about the PSU on this one, the fact that it froze with the display up mitigates against the PSU because the non-starting is quite a different problem .

Could be the Power-Good signal for the non-starting, but that wouldn't freeze it later on .

Nothing helpful comes to mind at the moment though . :(

Cheers
