2004-07-07 10:53:00 | I'm using Win 98SE I got a firewall a while ago & one application that comes up is "windows ipx/spx-compatible protocol driver" version 4.10.1998 in "C:/Windows/system/nwlink.vxd" There was also a Checksum but wasn't sure if it needed posting I searched the internet but couldn't find anything relevant or that i understood :( I'm on dial up & in 20 min it has recieved 2283940 bytes, while anything else is 15000 or so. Basically what I was wondering is: 1. What it does 2. Can it be blocked from the internet safely 3. Why it uses such a large amount of bandwidth (always around 75-90%) Thanks

2004-07-07 11:08:00 | ipx/spx is a networking protocol for lans. it can be set up to go over the net but there is no need for it. sounds like you either have your networking incorrectly setup or something is disguiseing itself as an ipx driver. | tweak'e (174) | |
2004-07-07 11:12:00 | You should be able to disable/remove IPX/SPX from your network configuration (from Control Panel) as you probably don't need it (unless you're playing network games that specifically require it - most don't anymore, as they usually use TCP/IP now). Mike.

I can't quite remember W98, but I think Control Panel > Network Settings, find IPX/SPX and remove or disable it. > & remove would be trhough add/remove programs? No, its not a program, its a network protocol. > If i remove will it affect any other programs at > all? possible, but if it does you can re-add it as a network protocol later. > BTW i play a few online games, would it be going from > the time i connect even if i havent played a run a > game at all since starting up? Online games would more likely be using TCP/IP rather than IPX/SPX, but it might pay to check the games to see which protocol they use - it should tell you somewhere in the online game setup. Mike. |

2004-07-07 11:23:00 | well firstly do you have a lan or connrct to a network? if so removeing ipx/spx may break it. go into dailup networking, right click your dailup connection, select properties, go to "server types" and untick everything except "enable software compression" and "tcp/ip". also under networking click on dailup adapter, go to bindings and make sure only "tcp/ip>dailup adapter" is present.

2004-07-07 11:25:00 | um "re-add it as a network protocol later" is it downloadable from microsoft site or that? also under network > IPX/SPX-compatible protocol driver > Properties > Bindings it has "Client for microsoft Networks" and its ticked

2004-07-07 11:29:00 | also under networking click on dailup adapter, go to bindings and make sure only "tcp/ip>dailup adapter" is present. theres only IPX/SPX-compatible protocol TCP/IP Both ticked, untick IPX/SPX?
