250484 2004-07-07 22:59:00 Have you seen this (support.microsoft.com) MS Knowledge Base article? Don't know whether it is applicable since you haven't mentioned what graphic card he has. Jen C (20)
250485 2004-07-08 01:47:00 Once again, my bad; he has a GeForce FX 5700.

Ok i just reinstalled windows (again). Installed UT 2004 - it worked, then a few files copied later and it did the freeze thing.

250486 2004-07-08 01:49:00 Uh just for clarification - these files were copied to his documents - not the game folder. Growly (6)
250487 2004-07-08 02:05:00 Is he using onboard sound?? Sometimes the cheap onboard sound chips can cause problems with games....try for a driver update. Sb0h (3744)
250488 2004-07-08 06:26:00 Will do!

The problem has now progressed...

Random crashes - everything completely freezes.

No more restarts etc...

250489 2004-07-08 10:45:00 OK installed latest drivers - same problems.

It seems that every now and then windows will freeze during the startup, or during the game, but it will be fine on a restart.

Sometimes two restarts.

This is realy getting annoying...

I checked temperature, it's fine.

250490 2004-07-08 11:20:00 Run that memtest over the night. kiki (762)
250491 2004-07-10 03:30:00 Hey everyone (am I allowed to say "hey" now?),

didn't get a chance to run memtest: the new memory came. We checked the motherboard manufacturer's website and ordered the right type - and upon installation all the problems were fixed ! No more freezes and crashes :D

The RAM is usually the first thing I check - a lot of RAM ships faulty ex manufacturer - especially the cheap generic stuff or 2nd hand RAM ex TradeMe, plus you gotta have the right spec's. Altho' as per Growlys earlier post, MemTest sometimes plays havoc with the FDD - I haven't worked this one out yet but its not a major...
