250784 2004-07-08 22:10:00 I've recently acquired boxes of old PC parts and I'm trying to get a PC working.

Sorry the details are a bit sketchy, I’m at work.

I'm trying to get a P2 300 (Slot 1) CPU working in an Intel LX (or BX?) chipset motherboard.

I've changed the bus speed to 66mhz (the P2 300 runs on 66mhz bus), added 66MHZ ram, and plugged in the AT power suppy (MB has both AT and ATX power). The motherboard has onboard vga, and I’ve checked the jumper is set to enable it.

Upon turning on the PC, the power suppy fan starts up, but that's all. No CPU fan (yes it's plugged into the right plug), no HD noise, no BIOS page, no beep from the PC speaker. nothing. zip. nadda.

I'm guessing that power is getting to the motherboard, as the ON switch on the front of the case works.

Any suggesting on what i should be checking?

250785 2004-07-08 22:17:00 Whats the parentage of the Motherboard? (Make/model)

I had an LX chipset mobo, that used a 266 MHz slot 1 CPU, and it would not accept a 300 MHz CPU without a BIOS upgrade. Same symptoms, it refused to boot even to BIOS.

250786 2004-07-08 23:34:00 I'll have a look tonight; I found a manual for the MB on the web, and have used the manual as my reference to get the setting correct .

The manual does say that it supports the 300 MHZ P2, hence I’m confused why it doesn't post .

Cheers

250787 2004-07-09 02:57:00 It might be broken.;-) A lot of second-hand parts are that because they have been replaced. I recently bought 5 CPUs for $2 (100 MHz up to 1GHz). I suspect some of them work. (In fact I know the 266 MHz one does). Graham L (2)
250788 2004-07-09 03:30:00 I suspect you could be right!

I'm guessing I should at least get some kind of beep error from the PC Speaker if I have an incompatible CPU . I've tested everything else (ram, HD, pci cards) in another dinosaur and they work fine . So either the CPU or MB is rooted . . . :-(

250789 2004-07-09 04:05:00 Is there a jumper to tell the mobo what PSU unit you have connected?
i.e. AT or ATX.

The few mobo's that I've seen had a jumper on them to set this.

250790 2004-07-09 05:59:00 Probably a waste of time bothering. It's as Graham says.

If those boxes of stuff came from a dealer and ended up in an auction, then they most likely will be duff stuff that has been pulled out of PCs and replaced.

There are certain shady dealers in the Wellington region that delight in making a bob or two by putting junk that they know is "US" into Turners.

And yet.... there are mugs that buy the stuff, say like a box of hard drives, monitors that dont fire up, or a box of motherboards or CD drives. :)

On the other hand if you get junk for free, then it is worthwhile seeing if things will work.

250791 2004-07-11 23:26:00 I got the PC working on the weekend, turns out the AT power supply was faulty, it's now running an ATX power supply, and alls good :-)

Running spec are: p2 300, 96MB SD Ram, 10 GIG + 4 gig hds, cd-rom, network card, 8mb VGA etc...

I also made a p1 233 with similar specs with the boxes of parts, all for $67 (there’s enough for a couple more PCs).

I've found that about 75% of the stuff in the boxes works, so I’m happy with that.
