250709 2004-07-08 08:31:00 I've just bought a new laptop (pick up Saturday) and it comes complete with a wirless LAN card (802.11b/g. Given that I had a very difficult time getting WAF (www.boston.com) for the laptop, my budget for additional purchases is minimal. Despite my budget problems, I want to network the laptop with my desktop, so I can share a dsl connection (external dsl modem linked by network cable to PC LAN card).
Cheapest Way i can think of is an additional PCI wireless card for the desktop. modem is then connected to pc by 1 (wired) lan card, pc then connected to laptop via second (wireless) lan card. will this work? can the pc use two different network cards simultaneously?
will laptop be able to piggy back through pc to share internet connection?
will it be a hassle to configure?
$50 on a wireless lan card is wayyy cheaper than 2 or 300 for a combo wireless / non wireless router, which is my next option.
both systems win xp pro

help please?

250710 2004-07-08 09:05:00 There is no problem putting more than 1 LAN card in the PC or different flavours. Do a bit of research on MS ICS (internet connection sharing) because that is what you'll be using via the PC. It has it's glitches and gotchas (it's MS after all) and the PC will need to be on tather than an independent connection to the router but, hey it'll be better than EAF.

250711 2004-07-08 09:19:00 This sounds similar to what I've done a few weeks back.
I have an 802.11b wireless network, the WAP on my desktop PC was connected to its network card and my laptop uses a usb wireless network device.
I got wireless internet installed and the wireless internet device (service interface unit) is connected to the network card on the desktop PC; so, on professional advice I bought another network card and installed it in a PCI slot for my wireless LAN and hey! it worked.
I can use the laptop to connect to the internet through the desktop PC.
I use AnalogX Proxy server for internet connection sharing.
So, my answer would be, yes, it will work.
Just one thing, make sure the second NIC is a different make or model from the first and there shouldn't be any confusion with configuring; I have an Intel Pro... and a Netgear.... .

250712 2004-07-08 11:03:00 Just to clarify, it sounds like you want to connect the wireless adapter on the laptop to the wireless adapter on the PC... you will need a wireless access point in the middle, at least as I understand it?

No, most adapters will operate in "AdHoc Mode" and communicate directly without a WAP
