251163 2004-07-09 22:59:00 Is it possible to install Anti-virus software on CD so that it can be used to scan and remove viruses on "other computers" (other than your own)?

Cheers

251165 2004-07-09 23:11:00 How do you mean? You can most certainly save the installation files of an anti-virus program (eg AVG) onto a CD then install the program on another computer, as long as the program is a free or trial version. Is that what you are referring to?

You can also do an online virus scan from a number of places provided that the infected computer can get to them.

251166 2004-07-09 23:18:00 Thanks, Susan. Sorry for not making myself clear enough. What I mean is, if I got an infected machine (from someone else) without any anti-virus software installed and I want to scan and remove all those viruses; and there is no Internet connection available. If I can install an Anti-viurs program (e.g. AVG) so that I can use it to scan the PC. bk T (215)

251168 2004-07-09 23:42:00 Yes, you most certainly can save AVG to a CD to install on and scan another computer.

Don't forget though, that you will need to either download the latest version prior to burning and using, or you will need to manually download the latest virus definitions and save them to a floppy disk to update the copy you have on the CD.

The free AV that Hook was referring to was probably AVG.

251169 2004-07-10 01:06:00 Also throw on there a program called stinger from here (vil.nai.com) Some virus will stop AV programs being installed. This little program will kill most of these. It is free and doesn't require installing either. Then install your AV (such as AVG) and scan an kill any left. Pheonix (280)

251171 2004-07-10 01:53:00 There is also F-PROT for DOS which is free, it can be run from floppies or CD.

www.f-prot.com

It now requires 2 or 3 floppies as the signature files are so big, at one time the program and the signature files would all fit on one floppy.

There is a lot to be said for booting from DOS and running a DOS AV program without having to fire up a virus infected Windows.
