251138 2004-07-09 22:35:00 Hi everyone,

The following is from a (not very computer-literate) friend of mine:

<<
that persistant webpage I have is a fairly common but extremely difficult one to get rid of by the name of cws.searchx. I had a computer guy try to rid me of it to no avail. It is a nuisance only, but insulting I have to change my homepage back every time I use internet explorer. It mutates itself with a slightly different number to reinstall itself. Kill one version another pops up immediately.
>>

Does anyone have a permanent fix?

TIA

I've also done what I should have done in the first place and googled for cws.searchx and found a bunch of references to fixes, but if anyone has personal experience it would still be useful.

251143 2004-07-09 22:51:00 Run CWShredder (www.spywareinfo.com) and get it to fix, not just scan, then download and run Spybot. After using Spybot enable the Immunize setting and also the one to lock the homepage to the one required. Susan B (19)
251144 2004-07-09 22:51:00 Yeah, thanks JimB.

It would be reallky nice if people could post responses without finding it necessary to oush a barrow at the same time.

251145 2004-07-09 23:00:00 Thanks everyone for the swift responses - I've passed them on to my friend.

Sorry for posting without researching - brain not fully in gear today.

JimB - sorry for snapping at you (and the awful typing).

No problem, it might seem I am pushing a barrow but it doesn't worry me if people use IE but they can't complain after receiving all the information and recommendations when they get hijacked, and get dialers and spyware installed.

You did ask for a permanent fix.

The fact is if they were not using IE it is unlikely their homepage would have been hijacked.

251147 2004-07-09 23:47:00 Recommending a different browser isn't pushing a barrow,Its just good old fashioned advice. metla (154)
