250940 2004-07-09 07:08:00 Hi guys,

Well I've just bought a new Asus P4P800-SE mother board, a P4 2.8Ghz Prescott CPU and 120 GB Seagate SATA hard drive.

Now I have absolutely no expereince with SATA drives, RAID and all that sorta stuff.

Basically what I would like to know is...

1) Can I just plug the SATA drive in and install windows?

2) Do I need to worry about the RAID setup or will windows handle that
for me.

3) I know it's a bit late to be asking this (seen as I have already bought
the drive) but what are the benefits of SATA hard drives.

4) The reason I bought the SATA drive was so that I can get a DVD-
Writer. I already have DVD-ROM and CD Rewriter, but I would like to
keep all these drives installed. I read an article that recommends not
using the DVD-Writer for DVD playback as well, as it will increase the
lifetime of the laser. Is this true?

cheers

250942 2004-07-09 10:31:00 Ok... you need to hit F6 during installation where it says hit F6 to install a "3rd Party SCSI Driver" ... insert your mobo CD-Rom and find the right SATA driver... then you can install as per normal!

Yes - but make sure to install the SATA driver when it gives you the option to install a 3rd party scsi driver.

I don't.

Ummm... theoretical faster burstable rate, or something like that i think...? But it's smaller wires for me, and better air flow! ;)

Well... debatable... by the time you wear a laser out, DVD drives will be cheap as to replace.. but I still have a DVD-Rom just for reading and a Sony DRU500A just for writing.

I guess I spent so much money on the drive, I'd like to get the most use out of it as poss!
