At this stage Telstra is set to withdraw routes from WIX (and maybe APE*) by end of october/start of november . . . just like Telecom is toying with at the moment - some of you may remember Trademe running slowly or not at all a while ago . . . that was due to xtra removing a route from WIX, which caused traffic to flood via auckland and giving Trademe a 5 digit data bill overnight .

*for those who have no idea what I'm on about, WIX and APE are NZ's major internet exchanges

They're doing this to make more money basically: "protect our assets, intellectual property etc etc", but it has the disadvantage of making domestic traffic slower (a lot of it may have to go via Auckland - national WAN links are going to go ballistic), domestic traffic will most likely be charged at the same rate as international traffic (say byebye to the notion of free national data), and it will put a whole world of financial hurt on the smaller ISPs, vISPs and wISPs . Some ISP's will be forced to shove all their domestic traffic via their International Links, flooding their chunks of SCC with uneccessary data . All in the name of a little bit more cash (at present estimated to be only about several thousand per month) for the big T's

Of course ISP's arent running on huge profits as it is, so to pay for fat pipe interconnect links is going to cost them somehow . . . and where do you think they get their money? Your pricey "kinda-but-not-quite-broadband" connection may get a tad pricier for worse performance . . .

Of course this is all worst case scenario (actually worst case is all the small players being wiped out leaving only xtra, paradise, ihug and a few lucky others - you could argue that such action while good for the beancounters is ultimately anti-competitive), but it IS a very real and very close threat to not just broadband but the entire internet in NZ . Just think - usability down, cost effectiveness down, restrictions up, choice of provider down . . . Sounds like the consumer is set to lose big time . . .

If it does happen, the best hope for us is that all the smaller (and other bigger - ihug for example) players gang up and just dont peer with Telstra or Telecom . Trademe and all its subsites is still hot property now and is hosted on neither Telstra or Telecom . . . if it doesnt peer with either, both Telcos will find their majority of internet customers on Xtra and Paradise respectively are going to be very angry .

Nice in theory but remains to be seen :(

250968 2004-07-11 10:41:00 If anyone is interested do a search on google (or whatever) in NZ only for: peering. Basicaly the whole setup, with Telecom and Telstra being the big players, smells to high heaven. Some traffic has already had to be routed via Aussie for you to connect to a site across town.

Didn't take long after the Telecom commissioners decision not to unbundle the local loop for Telecom and chums to stop playing nicely, as they had being doing leading up to the decision (nice, is used as a relative term in this context, not as badly would be more accurate). Aardvark.co.nz (amongst others) has a bit to say about the whole sorry mess we are heading for.

It only affects Wireless routers not hardwired. However the ADSL signal will cause noise on a cordless phone that is only using a filter and not had the line splt properly.

I have an older style Uniden cordless (not a 2 . 4 ghz one), though a filter and there's no static or reception probs .

I do have a 2 . 4 Ghz one . No hassles with the ADSL connection at all but do get static . I have a seperate line anyway so it is no issue for me .
