| 251357 | 2004-07-10 08:34:00 | Hi guys, I have been given a friends HP Pavilion 4512 desktop machine to sort out as it was running like a 3 legged dog. The system restore disks that came with the machine are rejected by the machine when run as it says that they are not for that model. To that end I have reformatted the harddrive and done a clean install of Win98SE. Then the fun started, Display driver incorrect, and no Sound or Modem or USB. The display driver I have managed to sort out and after several hours of searching the web for a appropriate driver I have got the sound and Modem working. This is a Riptide combination card. The HP support site is hopeless for the drivers and all that is there are updates and the phone support is useless as well, he told me to take it in the be looked at. Ok whats left is no USB , driver majic detects it as a SIS 5587/8 controller and recommends SMSC Win98SE V1.30.zip I have installed the SIS update but still no USB support. Any thoughts please..... Should i delete the controller from the device manager and get windows to redetect it? If anyone has a HP Pavilion 4512 i would like a copy of the restore disks if that can be arranged. HP expected me to buy them again, but if they can't supply the correct disks in the 1st place why should I? |

| 251358 | 2004-07-10 23:35:00 | Ok, Sunday mornings progess, Removed the harddrive and installed another that was setup on another machine with a clean install, redetected all devices etc, still no USB Had another look at HP's website and have managed to get in to the bios.. it says to change under the advanced option to enable legacy USB support but there is no such option on the bios. Motherboard is a P5S-VM (ASUS ?) Phoenix bios version 1009 I haven't been able to find an updated bios so that i can flash it and upgrade it. Suggestions please.. |

| 251359 | 2004-07-10 23:47:00 | The motherboard manual can be found here:- www.motherboards.org I note that USB support is disabled by default. A read of the manual may help you out. |

Have you tried the Microsoft updates that may provide a legacy usb driver also have a VERY good look at at the hp recovery disks they somtimes have a directroy "drivers" (yippie, but wait theres more). The names of the sub directories are cyriptic to say the least. Good hunting |

No where in the bios options was there anything to enable or disable USB. The controller is working ok in windows with 500mA available but windows will not detect either a plugin flash card or a printer attached to those ports. |

| 251364 | 2004-07-11 08:00:00 | I know I am coming into this discussion very late, but we had the same problem on daughters HP re discs not for that puter, and after a lot of hassle, I sent it away to a repair techie and he just blew the dust out of the puter, put the reformat and repair original discs in the cd drive and it reformatted beautifully. Exactly the same discs as it told me weren't for that computer. Talk about wanting to scream, but I wish you luck with yours. | supergran (108) | ||
