Avenue A turns up as a "Tracking cookie, or tracking site." When I Run Spybot S&D. I don't think Spybot S&D actually blocks cookise though.

251282 2004-07-10 15:10:00 I tried uninstalling Spybot S&D with XP's add/ remove programs; each time it just started the program scanning. A safty feature I figure, so I installed over the old version, no problem. Vince (406)

I didn't think so either, but when that little eye icon appeared on my taskbar and I r/clicked on it a window came up showing what had been blocked. Am sure spybot was down as the blocker.
This happened when I was running IE, haven't noticed it yet on Firefox.

Just looked on the Tools>Resident page of spybot 1.3.0.12
It says "This page lists the protocol of Spybots additional download blocker [the basic ActiveX blocking will not be logged, so this will only display the results of the 2nd layer of protection] If you are using Win9x, ME, or NT/2000/XP with an administration account, you can also install or uninstall the blocker here."

Below that is the following:
...Resident "SD Helper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker] active...
I have got a tick in the checkbox.

Maybe this is what is happening. I have administrator rights and have WinXP pro. Would be interested to know what is really happening.

What eye icon? I haven't seen this on IE or Mozilla or on my desktop (XP).

1.3.0.12? Where did you get this version number from? Under Spybot, Help, About I only get 1.3 (plus I have done updates up to yesterday). A quick search on Patrick Kolla's website found no reference to 1.3.0.12 - have you got a clone copy?

In addition to all of the useful bits and pieces, Spybot blocks known tracking cookies - but only for IE. Have you activated the Immunize tool in Spybot? This turns the blocker on. Plus if you look here (www.spybot.info) Patrick Kolla lists all of the things that Spybot does.

251285 2004-07-11 01:36:00 Hi Andrew93
Going into Windows explorer>programs>Spybot then R/click on icon of Spybot application and select version tab, it says 1.3.0.12

If I run Spybot itself, under Help>About it says 1.3
My version is not a clone copy and was downloaded from Spybots home page.

The red and white Icon is the shape of an eye. Just a thin outline, white in centre and a bit of red. I definitely saw it quite a few times and was able to R/click on it and saw items it had blocked. Wasn't seeing things. Next time I go on to IE, when it comes up I'll press alt + Esc to copy page. And then somehow find a way to show it on this site or something.

I have never seen it on Firefox.
On spybot's site where it shows what Spybot can do, there is a line -
<permanent blocking of known tracking cookies for IE> with Yes beside it.

251286 2004-07-11 06:18:00 Hi Andrew93

Many apologies. :(

Just used IE and went to Google News site, and the eye appeared.
D/clicked on it to see just what was running it and its an IE feature not Spybot.

You are perfectly correct.

Just climbing back into my hole.....

Spybot has its own uninstaller in the spybot folder. I would definitely uninstall V1.2 before installing 1.3. I seem to remember reading that as a recommendation from Spybot after I had problems loading over the top!

251288 2004-07-11 10:20:00 Just to add . If your having trouble downloading Spybot updates try using a different download server (mirror), change in the drop down list on the update window, the Aussie seems to work ok .

Defintiley, you should be using ver 1 . 3 by now (with immunise & Tea-timer on), 1 . 2 is no longer being updated .

If you can not see all the options and tools in Spybot go to > Start > Programs > Spybot S&E and enable the Advanced View (IIRC, similar anyway) in the program group . Next time you start Spybot there will be a wealth of new features to come to grips with .

I deleted my 1.2 and put in 1.3 from the PCWNZ cover disk. It pulled in the updates no problem. Seems to work OK for us Wellington folks.

You're right. I thought I was running SB 1.3, but when I started checking I got different version numbers depending on where I looked, ie 1.1, 1.2. When I looked at the folder I found that 1.2 had installed in its own folder next to 1.1. It's a wonder that they weren't both running at the same time!
This topic has proved unexpectedly educational.
