2004-07-13 20:47:00 | I consider myself an Old (as in years) Newbie - I know a few things about my OS, etc. etc. but I'm usually flummoxed by something I haven't seen before. Following the FAQ's in PF1 usually in such a case usually work very well and I consider the experts on this Forum as excellent. As a matter of interest, will I stay a "Newbie" forever? I do not work in IT at all - my IT experiences are purely after hours, on my home PC (although I connect up to PF1 from work just to monitor). For the record - ask me anything about the old MSDOS, Lotus 123, etc and I'm the man - but that was 10-20 years ago. :p :\ Sarel

However, as one becomes battle hardened in some aspects of computing, you develop an outlook that helps you survive new things. There is nothing wrong with knowing about Dos or 123. I still remember /WGDP (wonder if anyone knows what that command was for). I wish I still had a copy of 123 for the occasional quick spreadsheet job, the macros were great. The trick is to not act like a newbie, which I admit I do sometimes. robo. |

2004-07-13 21:08:00 | Hi Sarel You beat me hands down. :-( Don't know Dos, Lotus, still learning about my own computer system. Only open program (if that's what they call it) is Firefox, and only took that on because you just install it and it works without having to tamper with it. I'll have 'Newbie' written on my forehead till the day I die. But for all that I love my computer to bits, it goes well, and that's all that matters to me. Marg

2004-07-13 21:13:00 | Robo I think it stands for Worksheet Global Disable something - but then my brain cells are starting to go these days or they are too lazy to get up and do some work. B*gg*r :) Sarel

2004-07-13 21:15:00 | It's actually Worksheet, Global, Default, Printer. That was the first thing I ever did on every PC, to set the default printer up for printing. Back in the days where each program on a PC needed command strings for compressed print, landscape, and so on for the printer. I can't believe my brain cells from the '80's are still alive. Maybe that is why I can never remember where I left my cellphone..... (too much brain is ROM rather than RAM). robo.

2004-07-13 21:52:00 | Yeah - something up there is stirring - I remember it too - and I used to use these shortcuts (like /wgdp) all the time - no time to use menus (too slow in those days without a mouse). I received one of the first imported IBM PC's at my work place in the early 80's, and of course nobody available to help out (you could not phone the USA daily) so it was learn by trying and I can't tell you how many times I deleted the whole bloody Lotus file (and yes, without saving) once we moved to a HD in stead of the two 5.25 floppy's). I even once or twice deleted the whole HD (coz shortcuts were so easy and fast - sometimes too fast!!) Fond memories - Dot matrix printers, black & white screens, etc. :) Sarel

2004-07-13 23:45:00 | Yes, twin floppy machines, those were the days (they were so much better than single floppies). One whole disk for data. Luxury. Programs to print sideways on dot matrix printers for wide worksheets were heaven. Where's my walking stick gone? robo.

2004-07-14 00:48:00 | marg Don't worry, it will slowly get better (or so I hope). I thought I knew everything and we did (at one stage) but these days the technology is moving just too fast. The message is - geez, at least you're trying, some of the ppl won't even try. Some of my employees haven't touched a computer in their life (altho' I can't figure out whether they know that an ATM is also a computer-connected system). :) Sarel
