251929 2004-07-12 20:23:00 I have installed a HAM modem from Dick Smith. I think Mandrake 9.1 has recognized it but it is listed under "Unknown Device"
When I try to connect to the internet, it gets as far as "initialising modem" or something similar and stops.
I don't think I have installed the drivers properly.
They are on a CD. There are five drivers, each in two sections "tgz & sig"
They are intel-536ep modems. Some have others letters after the name like M or R etc. How do I get the drivers from the CD and which one do I use? I hope someone can help me with this and tell me exactly what I have to do. I am not much good at using the Konsole. I do not know what commands to type. Is there anywhere I can go to find out what all these commands mean???
Thank you, Allan

251930 2004-07-13 02:50:00 What is the Dick Smith type number? That way we might be able to refer to the DSE manual. The .tgz file(s) are compressed packages, almost certainly of source code so you can compile the driver module to exactly suit your kernel.

If the letters "mdk" appear in one of the filenames, use that one, but I don't think a modem driver would be that critical.

Log in as root. Start a terminal. "mdir a:" will tell you what is on a floppy or "ls /mnt/cdrom". Then just copy the whole LINUX directory to your "/root" directory. cp -R /mnt/cdrom/LINUX ./ if it's a CD. mkdir LINUX
cd LINUX
mcopy -t a:/LINUX/*.* ./ will give better results with a floppy.

... then tar tvzf blah*.tgz (use the first few characters of appropriate driver tgz file name instead of "blah" ;-)) will show you what is in the copmpressed file. up-arrow will give you the command again, then move the cursor and change the" tvzf" to "xvzf" then hit <enter>.
cd to the new directory and look for any file called INSTALL or README , etc. You will probbably be told to do soemthing like . ./configure, followed by make all then make install.

This will all go pear shaped if you haven't got the development package installed. :D That has the compiler and all its assistants. You probably also need at least the kernel headers package.

Try it and let us kinow how you get on. A modem shouldn't be too much of a problem. :D

For where to go to find out all the commands mean, try my FAQ80 on this site ... or even your own computer. ;-) I know Mandrake 9.2 has a package called "rute" which is an electronic copy of a very good book on Linux. Look for it on your 9.1 CDs. (in the Mandrake/RPMS directory. (The Installation2 and International1 disks use RPMS2 and RPMS3 for the directory name). You can load many .RPM packages from the terminal with rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/nameofpackage*.rpm. Or use the GUI Control Centre programme manager.

251931 2004-07-19 20:32:00 Thank you for that information. I have the rute file on my computer but it will take forever to read it.
My Mandrake 9.1 has recognized the modem and I have filled out everything required in kppp but when I try to connect it gets as far as "initialising the modem" and stops there.
Any idea what I should do to make it connect. Thank you, Allan
