252006 2004-07-13 20:21:00 its one way of locking the hardware to the software ie on sell your pc, Your recovery disks are then no good to anyone but the owner of the pc.
I must add that I donot agree with recovery disks or partions though for the very reason that if your hardware fails and you replace it with another brand chances are that recovery software is not going to work. Same goes for a failed hard drive with a recovery partion on it.
One pc I had threw a hissy fit when I added a scsi card to it. The recovery disk wouldnt work because the hardware had changed so I guess this particullar recovery disk not only looked at the BIOS, but machine hardware as a whole.
note it wasnt a pc-coy either (brand will remain unamed)

George when it comes down to it blame the software pirates, they are the ones that have forced pc and software manufactures into doing this they are only rightly protecting whats theirs.

A recovery partition on the HDD is common practice nowdays with the big PC manufacturers such as HP/Compaq.
A friend has a late model compaq & somewhere in the programs menu is an option to make your own recovery cd's.
Supposedly the D: partition won't ever need a clean out or Format.
If the HDD dies you can have your new HDD re-imaged by the PC manufacturer at a cost to you if it's out of warranty.

Just one of the reasons that brand name pc's are a bad idea, what amazes me are people that get stung, and in retaliation buy another brand name comp.

I see it quite often, Peoples comps out of warranty, either needing a new hard drive, mobo or psu, all of which necessitate a new OS.

252009 2004-07-13 23:25:00 Cna you demand the Supplier gives you the Disc? MartynC (5610)
252010 2004-07-13 23:29:00 You mean at time of purchase?

I think people should walk away if the software isn't supplied.

And heres a cracker,The compaq recovery cd requires the files on the hd,You can have your recovery cd sitting there pristene and shiny and it wont inisialise the recovery unless it reads files out of a hidden partition,if that partition is corrupted then.............**** outta luck.

If people didnt buy computers from appliance salesmen they may not get bent quite so hard.

252011 2004-07-13 23:56:00 The brand of PC's we sell at my work come with a Windows XP OEM CD which just has the company's details on it. Other than that it is a normal Microsoft Windows XP OEM CD and can be used to install on any PC you like.
Of cause you still need the Product ID number on the sticker on the side of the case! :D

Also, any other OEM software we happen to sell with the PC ALWAYS comes with the CDs (Office, Works, Works Suite etc)

I do mean time of purchase. Can you use the Consumer Guarantees Act against Compaq/HP to make them fix it, say if it 2 days outside the Warranty period?

Also, How can MS be sure They are not getting ripped off, if the supplier doesn't have to buy 100,000 CD's to give with new computers?

They buy the licence's & that should be stuck to the side of your case.
