251991 2004-07-13 05:44:00 I currently use IHUG Ultra, and am thinking about changing to the new IHUG wireless broadband/1000 service. I reckon I can save at least $30 a month with faster speeds by taking all my business to IHUG and dropping Telecom.

Questions:
I suspect I am only marginally in the coverage area - I'm in Waiatarua, ironically only a couple of km from the Waiatarua transmitter, but about 25km from the Skytower. Anyone in a similar situation who can report on quality/reliability/speed of service?

Any quality/connection problems anyone has experienced with the phone service?

How do real-life connection speeds compare with Ultra/Jetstream?

Any other issues I should be concerned about?

Why am I feeling so nervous about cutting the Telcom umbilical cord? :p

As usual, all opinions are welcome...

251992 2004-07-13 08:01:00 As is usual gamers have taken to this technology in droves (gamers always live at the edge of technologies looking for the ultimate gaming experience) and the reports look good. If you want heaps of info try this forum here.

There is extensive discussion of the new wireless as well as every other type of broadband and a great deal of help available from techos who work for the various telecommunications companies in NZ.

In fact there are 2 good local tech help forums covering the beast that is the PC. Here at PF1 and in the Hardware and Tech Help forums at www.gpforums.co.nz. If you cant get an answer here at PF1 you will get one at the GPForums.

251993 2004-07-14 05:06:00 I have experienced connection issue once, powering the unit down and restarting solved it.

Connection speed is better than ADSL, which was always slow for me at 600Mbps.

Gaming, not so sure. It's okay, but I have dropped out a few times, and I don't do it that often. Not as good as ADSL in that respect but doesn't bother me.

I have two months in which to make a decision about it, and I am leaning towards pulling the ADSL plug. Not looking forward to changing some aspects, though. I need to set up a router to handle it for the network, at the moment one machine using DUN to connect.
