251955 2004-07-13 01:20:00 have you checked your virtual memory?

What version of Windows is it?

251956 2004-07-13 01:28:00 For starters, in your browser got to Tools>Internet Options>Delete files and empty your temporary internet files. Get rid of all content stored off-line too. The above applies to Internet Explorer only, but similar options apply to alternative browsers.

How big is your HDD?

251957 2004-07-13 01:29:00 Many thanks Growly for your reply. I am running Windows XP Home. My "C" drive size was 8Gb and the Virtual Memory size is 1536 MB. Peter F (5873)
251958 2004-07-13 01:31:00 How much RAM do you have?

Cause you could turn that virtual memory down a bit - the pagefile is often what fluxes and eats up more HDD space, then becomes small again.

Especially if you have 1.2 GB left and your pagefile is more than that.

251959 2004-07-13 02:03:00 Many thanks to Growly and Billy 8 for your replies. I will try your fixes and see if everything goes Ok. Petre F. Peter F (5873)
251960 2004-07-13 02:47:00 Further to other suggestions had a similar experience when Penicillin suddenly quarantined 24,000 files and left the C drive with no space. Suggest open C drive, check folder sizes and look for an abnormally large folder, go into that folder and see what folder/file has been on steroids. I updated and run Penicillin, emptied the quarantine folder and reclaimed about 24Gb from a 40GB drive. FrankS (257)
251961 2004-07-17 01:21:00 Many thanks Frank S. Sorry to be slow answering but have been away. I did what you suggested and found a file named Pagefile.sys which is 1.610.612.736 in size. What is this file? Can it be reduced or deleted? Again, many thanks and regards, Peter F. Peter F (5873)

Pagefile.sys is the swap file or virtual memory.

You can make it smaller but a better option is to buy more RAM.

251963 2004-07-17 01:34:00 Hi Peter,
The pagefile . sys file is your virtual memory - you cannot delete that file .

To reduce the size, or change the location of your pagefile, go to "System properties" (windows key + break) click the advanced tab, then the settings button under performance, and then advanced again .

At the bottom you can see an option to change the size of your pagefile (virtual memory) . Even when I had 256MB RAM I found a pagefile of 512MB made sure windows never complained .

BTW . many recommend setting the the initial and maximum size to the same figure, to ensure no pagfile fragmentation .
