1365345 2014-01-17 02:53:00 I have WIN7 on one HDD and I have been trying (playing) to install XP Prof onto another. I have tried several times and at the end of each I have reformatted the HDD. However, each time I try to install XP again, when the O/S boots, I get a multitude of XP Prof as operating systems to select from.

I have checked the WIN7 boot details and it only shows WIN7 Home as the operating system. I am lost as to where to find these XP Prof entries to write them out. It is as if the entries are buried somewhere on the XP Prof HDD but to me that cannot be. The only O/S on the PC is WIN7. Anyone any ideas please?

1365346 2014-01-17 03:15:00 In windows 7 What are you using to look at relating to whats Booting ?

W7 doesn't have the same boot.ini as previous versions ( XP ) did, its has a boot manager.

You have to be VERY CAREFUL editing it other wise you WILL make you W7 unbootable.

To see what you actually have, click start type in cmd right click run as administrator. then type in bcdedit take a screen shot of the results ( full results) and post it back.

You can always try using neosmart.net to look and see if you can edit out XP.

Once you can, then it would pay to disconnect the W7 drive and install XP , then re attach W7 and use something like EasyBCD to dual boot.

If XP is installed first, then W7 it works a lot better.

1365347 2014-01-17 03:31:00 Thanks WT but I can't work out how to take a screen shot and copy it to the forum. I'll investigate further but I can tell you that the only O/S showing is Win7 Home - no mention anywhere of the XP Profs. Bryan (147)

Run it from a virtual machine that way it installs as a separate OS within windows 7, and cant screw any of the W7 install. The only problem I'm having is one PC doesn't like USB drives sometimes.

I use https://www.virtualbox.org/ To save a bit of space I use a second drive as the storage for the VM's. If you want to do this, and get stuck - yell and either myself or someone else can help.
