1346068 2013-06-19 11:48:00 I don't know much about the contents but many international students do them to gain entry into degree courses, maybe b/c they couldn't get the higher entry requirements that is required than domestic students. I didn't know any domestic students who did foundation courses. Maybe if they didn't get university entrance requirements. Nomad (952)

Yes and no?

Most international students don't do foundation, because they usually come straight into a degree or diploma programme.
Most people in foundation are Maori/Islanders/immigants who can't get into a degree and want a "second chance" in life, cause they didn't do well in school either now or a long time ago.

Pre-2011 it was extremely easy to get into any degree [where seats weren't generally limited] in NZ provided you were over 20. Nowadays owing to government funding changes, this has become much stricter, so many more people go that route.

If I could, I would try to finish school - provided I know I would be able to get the credits required for university entry. Long term it is always better to have finished school. However if you aren't on a university pathway, ie trade-related subjects, go and get into the foundation programme PROVIDED YOU ARE MATURE ENOUGH TO BEHAVE YOURSELF IN AN ADULT ENVIRONMENT.
