1345688 2013-06-13 06:42:00 We got our VHF installed in 2000 by the pro's which they provided RG6 cable and a 2 way splitter. I got a UHF aerial from one of the wholesale electrical places, I can return without any issues. I only got 55% Signal and 10% Quality with a laptop's USB TV stick.

It was a 15 Element aerial. What to next, I could try a 90 odd one or a Phased Array. The coverage maps say our area is in the likely zone but we have houses on the hills obscuring the view towards the tv tower ......

Just now going to try the laptop again with some spare RG6 lying around without the splitter.

1345689 2013-06-13 07:44:00 I chucked a a/c powered signal booster in the ceiling about a metre or two from the aerial. Solved all my signal strength issues.

1345690 2013-06-13 09:11:00 How far are you from the transmitter? USB tuner sticks tend to have very poor insesitive tuners.

Are you in an area that still has UHF analogue?

Nomad try posting the issue on nzdtv.com

signal boosters and amplifiers ARE not the magic cure for everything as digital can be upset by having too much signal.

1345691 2013-06-13 09:29:00 Disconnect and remove the VHF antenna and combiner/splitter, then run the feeder direct to the UHF antenna. You don't need the VHF anymore and removing it, plus doing a direct feed to the TV will increase the UHF signal level into the Freeview decoder. They are not very fussy and I have 4 TVs running off one antenna with long feeders. I have a UHF amplifiewr set to its lowest power and all is well. My terrestrial UHF was marginal with the amp on full power.

1345692 2013-06-13 09:36:00 We are in Churton Park, our closest tv tower is Mt Kaukau, 10-15min drive away .... Thing is we can't see it b/c there are hills and houses in the way. We are on the bottom of Churton Park while the cars drive up the hill ....

Yep, we get Sky analogue (sat dish).
The houses up the road above us some are using 91 element, many only have sat dish. The house across from us uses a Phased Array.

We disconnected the VHF and plugged it into the 15 Element Yagi. We have a 2 way splitter - lounge and master bedroom. Installed by the pro for VHF and works great as of yesterday for VHF.

We don't have any standalone decoders. The lounge will continue to use Sky dish and the bedrooms would like to use computer tv tuners with on the computers rather than buying more stuff and taking up more space. We like to be able to change channels independently.

No idea with UHF analogue. We'v never had a UHF aerial before.

1345693 2013-06-13 10:49:00 This dipole/balum unit where you connect the television cable - does it look correct, there is no metal connection to the rest of the aerial . . . it's connected by plastic and that's it .

1345694 2013-06-13 19:58:00 The USB tuner here is better than the TV with the outside aerials (2 of them). I can only pick up 18 channels on the TV (inc Sommetsports), compared to 28 on this! Which also picks up the channels I cant see (channels in CHCH, Dunedin, and Rotorua). Thats using a powered one for all UHF aerial

Thats what I may try remove the VHF aerial completely, and connect the UHF directly to the wallplate. Thats (probably) why it cant pick up all the channels

1345695 2013-06-13 22:42:00 Again - took the cable off the splitter and direct into the USB device on the laptop - TV1 and 2. 55% Signal and up to 100% Quality. Maybe the splitters drops the connection. Maybe a larger aerial ... waiting for the data guy to get back to me from that electrical wholesale place :D Really rather not have a amplifier as we need a place to get a power source and rather not get a sparkie in to do his stuff. 1345696 2013-06-13 22:59:00 The power injector can plug into a wall jack at one of the TV's, they work like a PoE injector. Alex B (15479)
1345697 2013-06-13 23:13:00 I think I have low quality coax at home, I live in a good coverage area with a direct los to the transmitter but my signal strength is low. I fitted a mast head amp powered via the aerial socket*in*my lounge and a 4 way splitter and now it all works brilliantly. In the past I couldn't split it and still get enough signal. dugimodo (138)
