1345325 2013-06-17 04:58:00 We have had VDSL cabinets very close to house for 2 years and no one has tried to interest us in any way at all. Why was it installed if they don't want to encourage people to use it?
Fibre might be the same?

My mate has a UFB cabinet literally next to his letterbox, but he can't get it. The cable crosses the road and services the other side of the street :clap

We got a good 20Mbps connection with ADSL2+. We now get 28Mbps on fiber via Snap, I can't tell the difference. If I was doing a lot more uploading then perhaps but even when I am downloading I don't use a download manager to maximise the speed. We got it simply to future proof and it was free part of the govt's offer. The monthly fee is a bit less than our ADSL plan.

Maybe Skype has been more stable but there's many variables for that, maybe Snap was a better ISP ...

50/50 for me. ADSL2+ has enough downstream for me personally. VDSL2 would be great to boost the upstream. Fibre seems like a big amount of hassle to go through since there would need to be a trench dug, more new equipment added etc (currently have copper aerial lead-in)

VDSL2 you just upgrade the splitter and router and be done (hopefully!)

Or just go Naked VDSL2, and then you only have to suss out the router :)

Now that Chorus have dropped their wholesale rates it's a lot more cost-effective, the only deterrent really I see is the up-front investment in the router.

I believe you still need to separate the phone jacks if you go naked, to avoid potential signal problems. What you can get away with on ADSL... not so much with VDSL

Might be true, but if you don't have a phone line you can just disconnect the jacks rather than filter them.

Actually I think now you mention it you may be right, I heard Chorus were wanting to do something along those lines like a dedicated jackpoint during install. I should double-check since the June 7th pricing changes...

1345333 2013-06-19 09:33:00 The new Soccer package might encourage more people to get UFB! Digby (677)
1345334 2013-06-24 20:33:00 Or some of us just don't care that much.
I looked at the offerings.......the cheaper plan isn't much faster than what I have now.
The faster one is more expensive.
Can I justify it? I don't watch stuff online much, I don't download often.

So....nah....eventually, but not now.

Same when broadband came out, a richer friend than me got in early, cost heaps....I stuck with dialup until the plans got reasonable then did it.
