I guess Telecom is looking to stifle UFB use for those that like host their own services. I have had the same fixed IP for 10 odd years and host my own email and test web server and am looking at doing my own personal cloud storage service. Looks like UFB not going to allow me to do this easily without resorting to a Dynamic DNS service.

More likely Telecom did this to stop this package being used for business use . Im sure they will have another more expensive package for that.

You mean something like a rapacious $20 per month for a fixed IP address a currently found on lower end packages. You are probably right.

Just rechecked business plans. Same problem.

1345318 2013-06-12 10:57:00 Do you know if Snap & Orcon offer static IPs & port 25 unblocking on fibre? I don't see why that should be any different on fibre than it is on copper. Greven (91)
1345319 2013-06-12 11:17:00 Personally, I think it's the fact that there is no unlimited bandwidth plans. We're just going through the same old evolution we had with copper - Bandwidth is too low to make the speeds worthwhile.

But we also have a distinct lack of content. No netflix, no hulu or anything that offers digital content straight to your PC or whatever devices. Sky doesn't count, because it's sky.

combine that with a hell of alot of ambiguity around what it is, what it does and how much it costs and you've got yourself a 'why ****ing bother' of a cocktail.

1345320 2013-06-16 04:44:00 Why should primary schools get it first to do ABC's and chat with other schools

When I have some serious movies to download !

But seriously I have read that UFB take up was slow in other countries.

It will start growing once more people understand what it is and their friends start talking about it.

And when there are some good plans advertising and some good content.

Another reason I may not get it is that I would not be able to keep buying enough hard drives to store all of the "data"

1345321 2013-06-16 21:50:00 I'm looking into Snap fibre once we have moved into the house we have just bought as asimilar package to what we are on now will cost us less it seems gary67 (56)
1345322 2013-06-17 00:54:00 Another simple reason is many people are perfectly happy with current services.
Over the weekend I tried out windows 8 Xbox video app and hired an HD movie to watch - it streamed almost immediately and played smoothly at decent quality. Overall it was much better than my experience with Quickflix. The only things against it are the price and the range, I can go and hire a Blu-ray for less and it didn't seem like all the latest movies were available. On the other hand not getting the car out of the garage proboaly more than makes up for the price difference.

1345323 2013-06-17 01:47:00 Oh and something else that concerns me.

I see this statement "Fibre does not currently support Static IP or Port 25 unblocking commonly used for such things as hosting your own website or email server, remote security web cameras, remote access to server content like email or files." here www.telecom.co.nz

For what it's worth you can use personal cloud storage devices without a static ip, D-DNS or unblocking port 25. I've only tried SOHO grade stuff but I assume enterprise level stuff would work as well.

It's fantastic by the way, having your own cloud with a ~5MB/s uplink.

1345324 2013-06-17 04:56:00 We have had VDSL cabinets very close to house for 2 years and no one has tried to interest us in any way at all. Why was it installed if they don't want to encourage people to use it?
Fibre might be the same?
