1365436 2014-01-18 15:26:00 I'm thinking of getting a I5 4670K which I think is the top of the line i5 with GA-Z87X-UD5H motherboard that supports DDR 3000 and everyone say get 1600 or 1866 so why not get a higher speed for my RAM? I'm also getting this motherboard because it suppose to support about 16 USB ports which I need because I don't like USB HUBs which give me nothing but problems. lostsoul62 (16011)
1365437 2014-01-18 19:40:00 Looks like (from the site) the ram (from 1800 to 3000, has O.C after it). So, it may have something to do with Overclocking, what I dont know. Another site says Haswell supports up to 1600 stock at 1.5v. Anything higher would be considered as overclocking Speedy Gonzales (78)
1365438 2014-01-18 20:04:00 RAM speed means pretty much nothing if you have a dedicated GPU, sure if you were to run your ram at like 600mhz you might create problems for yourself but in systems with a dedicated graphics card anything over 1600mhz (and even 1333mhz for the most part) results in pretty minimal performance gain when you consider the cost of the ram itself (we're talking less than 1 fps usually). Cache latency is significantly more important than clock speed in RAM, having a high clock speed generally results in a higher cache latency. This will usually almost completely counter act any gain seen by having ram clocked at a greater speed. Hence the minimal performance difference. icow (15313)
1365439 2014-01-18 22:04:00 I'm with icow, for most desktops, even gaming, the RAM speeds won't be a hindering factor in the slightest, compared with the GPU it HDD. Chilling_Silence (9)
1365440 2014-01-18 22:50:00 I'm thinking of 8 Gigs of RAM and is there a difference in 1 stick at 8 Gigs or 2 sticks at 4 Gigs each? I figure 1600 might just be my best bet but I'm not sure what latency I should be looking at and price is no problem? lostsoul62 (16011)
1365441 2014-01-19 00:53:00 the cheapest.

wait till ddr4 if ram speed really matters to you.

though the other day i saw an article about 2.8GHz ddr3

1365442 2014-01-19 02:02:00 2 sticks is better for dual channel mode, still not a huge difference but worth buying RAM in matched pairs for. dugimodo (138)
1365443 2014-01-19 03:31:00 Sorry If I'm butting in on this thread but it's a very similar question to the OP & may be of help to him also.

Planning a new system for Flight Sim only.

Looking at Asus P8Z77-V with i7 3770K

Will be overclocked to somewhere between 4.1 & 4.4GB

Trying to work out the most appropriate memory for that use.

Looking at 2x 8GB Dual Channel.

Will be running on Win7 x64 HP

we enjoy posters!

not much posting on this forum

your system seems like reasonable overkill for flightsimx (are you running something else?)

get the fastest ram your mobo supports or get the cheapest and as much of it as possible. yes 1066MT/s (en.wikipedia.org(computing)) is fine but 1333MT/s (en.wikipedia.org(computing)) is like the same price.

just get one stick unless the cost is prohibitive.

good luck on the overclock.

its GHz not GB when talking about clockspeeds; the unit is Hertz not Bytes

HAVE A GREAT DAY

MT/s (en.wikipedia.org(computing)) is million transfers per second. the actual clockspeeds are less (en.wikipedia.org) ; ddr3 tops out at 1GHz where as ddr4 shall reach speeds of approximately 2GHz or 4266 MT/s (en.wikipedia.org(computing))" which is approximately 35GB/s

ALL HAIL DDR4+UMA

1365445 2014-01-19 09:42:00 The RAM speed won't matter. No point overclocking that CPU. Spend more on your GPU, and nicer high resolution / bigger monitors. Chilling_Silence (9)
