1345445 2013-06-12 04:53:00 Mid May I purchased my first SLR since I chucked photography and sold all my gear around 1990 (35mm SLR, 6x6 and 6x7) I have been slowly getting interested in photography again over the last couple of years so decided the time was right to get back into it. Not for part time work like I used to do, but just taking photos for my own pleasure.

I studied what was available and, as I like Canon gear, I decided on the new Canon EOS700d with the 18-135 STM lens. I chose that lens in particular as to have a reasonable zoom range (28-216mm in the old 35mm format). Also so I wouldn't be faced with 2 lenses to change with my stroke affected left side. Not an option to buy on internet from another country, but looked at NZ online prices. The NZ prices at the time on Pricespy ranged from $1499 to $1799. I went into the local toaster shop and told the salesman whom I had bought a few appliances off over the last few years, that I wanted a price for a cash deal for the above camera. I ended up with a saving over any of the online prices by $150.

Great camera, but with a large piece of glass hanging off the front, I decided I needed a tulip lens hood to keep any stray light out. Local shop quoted me $69.95 for genuine Canon hood. Horrified, I went online and bought an aftermarket one from Deal Extreme for NZ$6.71 delivered.

I would rather support local people but in this case, one would have to be a bit daft not to get the deal at 10% of the NZ price!!

1345448 2013-06-12 07:50:00 Ebay is a great source for Canon, add-ons, lenses, parts and accessories.

Sometimes you just have to wait a few weeks for delivery :)

1345449 2013-06-16 05:35:00 Ebay is great

But for technology etc I'd rather buy from an overseas online store - not some backyard guy.

1345450 2013-06-17 00:58:00 Lens hoods are ridiculous. Similarly I have seen most "genuine" Nikon Lens hoods priced at $50 to $60!! Ebay $5 ;)

Actual functional camera/lens parts I tend to pay a bit more and buy internationally from a genuine store. Things like tubes, hoods, caps etc are an ebay job. Also 2nd hand stuff for SLR's I'll get from ebay but in most cases I prefer to pay more for quality when it comes to my DSLR.
