252439 2004-07-17 02:03:00 The idea is that I was doing it off the top of my head. Of course, the X server is being used as a sub-process of the main session, so it won't help the sound. :D Unless the X console starts the sound process, when bumping its priority would help. ;-)

I haven't tried this. But I've heard the effects on my P233 laptop (with 96MB - unexpandable) so I sussed out the cause.

top is a very useful programme. It's always been popular on real multiuser systems, when you want to know who's hogging all the resources. The renice command is one of its useful things -- increasing ppriority is reserved to root, of course; any user is allowed to be nice. ;-)

What soundcard do you have though??

I noticed the same sorta effect with my familys onboard AC '97 sound. It worked fine in WinXP (Celeron 733Mhz) but not in Linux.

I installed Alsa and had no problems :-)

You could always renice the oss driver?!

Chill.

252441 2004-07-17 09:10:00 It is the onboard sound. This is from the pcchips website.

C-Media CMI9738 4-channel audio Codec
Compliant with AC97 2.2 specification

Don´t mean a whole lot to me.
Any help to you??
Thanks

252442 2004-07-17 09:51:00 The question begs to be asked:
Have you installed Alsa yet??

252443 2004-07-19 01:40:00 No not yet, the computer is not mine and is at a friends house, just gotta find a time to get there.......... rmcb (164)
252444 2004-07-19 02:18:00 Hey Chill, the alsa website has no listing for that chipset.
???????????

252445 2004-07-19 02:38:00 AFAIK It'd come under the CMI-8338 driver. Chilling_Silence (9)
252446 2004-07-20 02:27:00 Okay.
I am also going to try a pci sound card, disabling the onboard stuff.
Cheers

252447 2004-07-22 01:28:00 Chill
Just been playing around with my old p2 300 with Xandros.
I installed a creative live 5.1 card and those sites play aok!
Will try this card in my friends machine and hope.......
I also have some other friends with the exact same setup so I will try the alsa drivers on them.

252448 2004-07-22 02:30:00 Yeah, the emu10k1 driver is a lot more mature than the AC '97 driver - Ive used it myself without issues in Alsa and OSS :-) Chilling_Silence (9)
