Here is a user comment off of CNET - downloads: "WinRar thrashes Winzip hands down !!"
i've been using WinRar since version 2.6 & it keeps on improving. imo, WinRar is more versatile, stable & efficient than Winzip. WinRar supports/converts a wide array of archiving/compression formats (zip, ace, jar), thus u don't need that good-for-nothing Winzip at all.... or needlessly install several specific programs for every single different format. WinRar's performance is second to none. overall: pretty impressive!"

From http://www.7-zip.org/

The main features of 7-Zip:
Highest compression ratio in new 7z format
7-Zip is free software distributed under the GNU LGPL
Supported formats: 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB
For ZIP and GZIP formats 7-Zip provides compression ratio that is 2-10% better than ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip

Powerdesk 5 will be a better file manager than what I get with WinXP Pro.

Powerdesk will allow you to de crompress most archives. Very good file manager.

I have never tried to compress files using PowerDesk 5 but a very good program all the same.

For compression I use WinRAR. This works for me.
