252429 2004-07-15 02:50:00 When visiting sites using Flash, a friend of mine has garbled broken up sound.
The pc is running Xandros Linux on a Pc-chips m863mobo (sis741 chipset) with an xp2800+ cpu, 512mb ram, using the onboard sound. A music cd plays fine. I have used an external serial modem to elimanate any problems with the internal winmodem hogging cpu cycles but this has made no difference.
Is it time to try a seperate sound card?
The websites are kids stuff like barbie.com, looneytunes.com etc.
Thanks

252430 2004-07-15 04:01:00 What browser?

Has your friend grabbed the Alsa modules from the Xandros Networks?

252431 2004-07-15 09:02:00 Just the out of the box Mozilla from the Xandros install cd with the flash plugin from Macromedia´s site.

No to the alsa bit as I have heard of a lot of trouble with alsa & Xandros.

Any ideas??
Thanks

252432 2004-07-15 11:00:00 Give Alsa a try, it cant hurt.

Give Firefox a try also, see if its just Mozilla.

Souns more like a hardware prob to me though...

252434 2004-07-16 03:08:00 Linux is a multi-user multi-processing operating system. There are a lot of tasks running all the time. Some of the system maintenance ones can be busy users of disk from time to time, and can cause delays in your processes.

Try Ctrl/Alt/F2 to get a console, run top, and renice your X process with -12 or so.(enter "r",then the process number of the Xprocess, then "-12" ). The browser etc will probably be under the X process,so will inherit its priority. Ctrl/Alt/F7 will return you to the X session.

252436 2004-07-16 10:13:00 I think Graham's trying to say:
There's probably things running in the background - There always is with Linux.

Try this:
Hit Ctrl + Alt + F2 to get a terminal.
Login....

Now, run:
pgrep X | xargs renice -12

This will do the same as what Graham had said, but without use intervention :-)

When you're done, hit Ctrl + Alt + F7 to get back to your desktop environment and try it again.

Graham:
Can I ask why you're increasing the priority of X though?

252437 2004-07-16 10:17:00 Just thought I'd clear up two things:

1. Login as root after you've hit Ctrl + Alt + F2 or it wont work

2. "Nice-ness". Its the Linux priority system. Every process has a "nice" value, which is how "nice" it is to the CPU basically... -19 is not nice at all, so it hogs the CPU and gets high priority. +19 is the lowest you can go, meaning it is very nice to the CPU and lets everything else use it first... Low-priority.

Just thought I'd clear that up :-)

Cheers

252438 2004-07-17 01:58:00 Ok
Will try that, thanks guys.
One think that puzzles me though is that these websites work fine on my machine which has a slower cpu (xp1700 vs xp2800) and I only have 256mb ram vs her 512mb. My install of Xandros is exactly the same also.
What gives???.
