252913 2004-07-17 01:38:00 sorry for a new topic but I do need the help .

I recently installed windows 2k on my system . I have 2 HD's 40gb wit OS and 80gb . I want to go back to Win ME as I have too many problems with Win2k . newayz, last nite i tried to reformat 80gb HD from NTFS to FAT32 . It wouldnt do and said the HD was to big or sumthing to that effect .

How I was going to do it was, reformat 80gb as FAT32, move everything I want to keep there, then somehow reinstall ME on 40gb . How should i do that?

thanx for your help .

252914 2004-07-17 01:48:00 To change NTFS back to FAT32 requires a third party program such as Partition Magic. Within Windows you can go from FAT32 to NTFS easily enough, but not back again without losing data.

You can move all the data off the 80 gig slave drive and onto the 40 gig drive, and then partition and reformat the 80 gig drive. FAT32 has a drive size limit (?32 gigs), so you will need to make some partitions first to limit the size of each one. Say 30/30/20 gig 'ish (note, you won't get the total equally 80 gig exactly).

Then copy back all your data onto the slave drive you wish to save off the 40gig drive, and then reformat and install WinME onto the 40 gig master drive.

252915 2004-07-17 02:29:00 FAT32 has a limit if its made by Windows Installer...

Ive currently got a 96GB FAT32 partition, and I made it with Partition Magic. IIRC the limit is somewhere more closer to 130GB.

252916 2004-07-17 02:41:00 Just have the drive you want to install ME on actually connected to the computer, download a bootdisk form Bootdisk.com (www.bootdisk.com) , Windows ME Alt version.
Format and install ME.
If the drive has been formatted as NTFS, you may have to fdisk first.

thanks all. Just got partition magic, it converted in a flash just transferring files back and soon will be installing OS!!! SO simple.

Jen C, I originally had a 40gb HD which was formatted under FAT32 by windows, i am not sure what the limit is but i imagine it would be quite large :D

again thanx for all your help
