| 252724 | 2004-07-16 05:15:00 | Somehow I managed to add to the Start Menu "Set Program Access and Defaults" (cannot recall how I did this). To my surprise, when I turned the laptop back on, a message box appeared requesting the owner's (or administrator's?) password. Egad!! I thought I had screwed up my wife's laptop and would not be able to acess it anymore since we did not have any such password. But I clicked on Cancel and all was OK. However now I am reluctant to turn the laptop off for fear that it may request a password and lock up the system. How do I rectify this problem? I have tried several means via Accessability Options and the Control Panel, but no luck. If I can get rid of "Set Program Access and Defaults" and return to how it was, then we will be happy. Hmmnnnn, I guess I could go back to a system restore point or is there a better way? Thanks. |

| 252728 | 2004-07-16 05:36:00 | To clarify: When clicking on START, two columns appear. The "Set Program Access and Defaults" is in the right column, between Control Panel and Connect To. Items in the left column can be right clicked and deleted, but not those in the right column. And it is not [ in the Startup folder start > All Programes > Startup, ] So now what ??? |

| 252729 | 2004-07-16 05:39:00 | Well, I checked System Restore and a restore point was not made automatically when I somehow changed the Start right-hand column. Yes, I could go back to a Restore Point made automatically this morning when updating Windows, but this would remove or make unavailable the updated program/section/whatever it is called. I would think that there must be a cleaner way to rectify the problem....? ?:| |

But if you just want to remove that item from your start menu list, can't you just remove it via - (usning xp pro here) easiest i guess - just right click the taskbar - properties - Start Menu - tab - then - customise - then Advanced tab - and remove it via there? By unticking it if it appears... HTH |

I was going to add that i don't think anything in those settings will affect if you get a prompt for a password though?? As all those settings do is set the default programs you wish to use e.g I.E or Firfox, Outlook or O.E, Msn or win mess etc.... |
