| 252598 | 2004-07-15 12:05:00 | A friend has Windows 98 ,Outlook Express for e-mail amd Actrix as their ISP. Somebody stayed in their house and it would seem used the computer. There is strong suspicion that that person now has access to e-mail on the computer. Could you please advise how to find out if any software has been installed by the person who stayed in the house that could be sending all e-mail to another PC somewhere. I am no expert but thought that some steps to take if such software cannot be detected would be to change the Actrix password and also install a different e-mail program. What good free e-mail programs are available? Any suggestions about what to do to ensure the e-mail is secure? Thank you |

First I would suggest they run Ad-aware & Spybot Search and Destroy & see if they find any keylogers then I would do is change the account password & any other passwords you think that "they" might of got. > and also install a different e-mail program. It does not matter which e-mail program they used, as if they wanted the password they could get it. Hope this helps |

What do you mean?, do you mean they found out there password? > Could you please advise how > to find out if any software has been installed by the > person who stayed in the house that could be sending > all e-mail to another PC somewhere . Also what e-mail client where/are they using? |

| 252602 | 2004-07-15 12:41:00 | Get them to park up in front of the computer and call the Actrix helpdesk for assistance. They can sort out changing their password etc and be guided through making the required changes on the PC. Browse through add/remove programs and look for anything unknown and query it. Chances are they haven't installed anything that's spying, more likely that they have used an easily available tool to life the saved password off the PC and are using a webmail tool or similar to "spy". Though even then I think it'd be a fairly unlikely scenario. What is the reason for suspicion? |

| 252603 | 2004-07-15 12:55:00 | Oh, and a different e-mail program won't make a shred of difference to this problem (if in fact there is one). Though it might be a change to get away from the security plagued Outhouse Express and get some good ole Thunderbird (www.mozilla.org) lovin'. |

| 252605 | 2004-07-15 21:43:00 | Many thanks for your suggestion. We have already changed the password and were going to install Spy Cop today.Another step is to go to another ISP I guess. | John Cameron (5879) | ||
| 252606 | 2004-07-15 21:49:00 | Many thanks for your suggestion. We have already changed the password and were going to install Spy cop today. Will also look at changing ISP and installing a new e-mail program. There are good reasons for suspicion which are not appropriate to outline here. | John Cameron (5879) | ||
