253208 2004-07-18 04:37:00 It's Madhatters Tea Party time again. #1 son is upgrading his PC and I am getting his handme down. My current pc is being gifted to the grandchildren to use when they visit. It has been suggested that they be networked and i am currnetly looking at the appropriatte hardware for that. My question refers to OS, one operates on ME the other on XP, #2 son who has built all our pc's advises that the fact that they operate on a different systems isnot a problem but as they will be linked for a number of reasons least of which is so that I can use both to sort, edit and store media files makes me think that maybe I should look at installing XP on both machines. A so called "Upgrade" version of XP is available for ME users but have been told to avoid it, I would like some informed comment please.

Ps I have been advised that an 8 port hub would be best comments on that would also be apreciatted.

Regards

Percy

We would have to know the computer's specifications before being able to provide "informed comment" as it might not have enough grunt for Win XP. ;-)

If the computer is running sweetly at the moment there probably isn't really any need to upgrade.

The forum has a FAQ on networking (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) that might be of some use. ;-)

An 8 port hub sounds a bit of an overkill to connect 2 PCs. Maybe think about a 4 port hub?

253210 2004-07-18 06:14:00 Its not going to affect performance if one is WinXP and one isnt.

Personally if you're happy with what you currently have then why bother investing the extra $$ for it?!

Otherwise, I agree with Fire-and-Ice

Chill.

253211 2004-07-18 06:23:00 I agree an 8 port hub is over the top for 2 PC's. Depending on the distance between the 2 PC's, a wireless network could be an option instead of running cables and also gives the option to move PC's around the house. As for upgarding ME to XP, like the others have said, if ya happy with what ya got then don't bother. Berryb (654)
