253159 2004-07-18 02:57:00 I have been pondering about the best way to keep a record of all of the interesting subjects and tips I see on PressF1. Using search is certainly valuable but sometimes it is useful just to hone in more quickly on something I read about many months ago.

At one stage I was thinking of keeping a copy of the particular links which were of interest by putting them in a word document and having them in a table eg
pressf1.pcworld.co.nz
.............is about MyIE2 browser

More recently I have begun to think that it would be a simpler thing to just record the thread number in a table in a word document eg

Number.....................Subject
49291....................... Pros & Cons of using MyIE2 browser
49271........................Wireless mouse

then I would just need to substitute the number in the web address of any thread and hit enter and > Bob's your uncle !

Susan, if I recall correctly, uses a rolodex (is that what it is called ?) and that is obviously another way - but would not suit me.

Any other ideas ? What do you do ?

253161 2004-07-18 03:21:00 Thanks Stu, but that is too imprecise for what I want to do. In some instances I will want to include more detail eg

Number.....................Subject
49291.......................Pros & Cons of using MyIE2 browser
48667.......................How to use tabbing in Firefox
................................Susan's comment about internet banking
................................and IE etc

(By the way as I cannot reproduce a table above and as using tab,or space bar on the keyboard does not seem to give multiple spaces, I am using full stops as a means of showing the layout .)

253162 2004-07-18 04:01:00 Susan B will doubtless correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the programme she uses and recommends for exactly this purpose is called KeyWallet. You might find it at www.keywallet.com/ or http: . Graham L (2)
253163 2004-07-18 04:14:00 I think AZZ Cardfile is the program Graham.

253164 2004-07-18 04:22:00 :_| So It Is . :_|

I searched using "cardfile" and User "Susan B" in the site search . Couldn't find it in the first couple if postings given , and went further down to find a link .

Search terms "azz cardfile", Username "Susan B" gets it in the first hit . I won't retype the link .

253165 2004-07-18 04:32:00 Keep it simple - use the "watch this topic" function, and then you can go back and look at the topics you watch. You can manage what is watched through my settings and my watches. andrew93 (249)
253166 2004-07-18 04:37:00 That is interesting and useful Graham and Billy, but what I am trying to do is to identify the best way to maintain my own records of useful things I find in PressF1 . What I was trying to illustrate was that thread 48667 has two useful things in it . One is "How to use tabbing in Firefox" and the second is "Susan's comment about internet banking might still not be safe in IE and not to access internet banking using a bookmark" ! Now that is a lot of information to store in a bookmark [as Stu suggests] and I thought that recording such information would be clearer and readily available in a table in a word document where on one side I record the thread number and on the other side I record detail(s) about what interest(s) the thread holds .

Actually, thinking about that further it would probably be better to have the topic to the left and the thread number to the right . That way I could keep the topics in alphabetical order and find the topic easier . In fact to expand that thought, there would be two separate topics as part of the table - one being "Firefox tabbing - how to" - thread 48667 and "Internet banking - risk minimisation" - thread 48667 .

How about that ?

253167 2004-07-18 04:45:00 The cardfile is a simple database, which allows you to give one item a number of attributes which you can search on. It is designed to be searched. A Word file can be searched.

The difference might be subtle, but it makes a difference in ease of use.

When you own only a hammer, everything is a nail. But screwdrivers make a better job of driving screws.

253168 2004-07-18 05:10:00 Thanks Billy and Graham - I have cottoned on and have found the thread re AZZ Cardfile and all of Susan B's great advice and tips. It looks like it will suit my purpose very well. Off to download and try !!
