2004-07-21 02:17:00 | > Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo Platinum: $264 ascent.co.nz An interesting article new out yesterday, should be useful to you (www.anandtech.com). If you are buying in a few months anyway some of those boards will be still good or Nforce4 will be out. > RAM: 2x Corsair 512MB PC3200 DDR (400Mhz) CL2 Memory with Platinum Heat Spreader: $452 pp.co.nz Should be good. Paradigm PCs are pretty good, just a little slow on the delivery sometimes (2days rather than overnight). > Optical: Sony CRX320A Retail 52x32x52x 16xDVD Internal IDE: $128 pp.co.nz You could do better with a Liteon SOHW-832S. > Hard Drives: 2x Western Digital Raptors WD740D 74GB 10000rpm: $886 ascent.co.nz One would be sufficient (www.anandtech.com). Get a storage drive as well, 160Gb seems to be the best price for Gb at the moment. > Graphics card: Gigabyte GeForce 6800 GT video card, 256MB DDR3, GeForce 6800 GT, 8XAGP, VIVO, DVI: $825 ascent.co.nz In a few months time you'll probably find a better offer around for some components, so keep some things penciled in at this stage. ;)

2004-07-21 04:18:00 | That article is interesting. ?:| I've seen a substantial decrease in loading times of games using RAID0 compared to a single drive. Admittedly not Raptors, Seagate 7200 RPM 120GB SATA drives. I disagree with their comment about the drive mean time between failure rate halving using two drives. The probability of either of the drives failing remains the same, even though there is now a higher chance of losing data if a failure does occur, but I'm probably splitting hairs. Maybe the Raptors are just THAT good on their own, perhaps Wilky could duplicate the experiment if he decides to go with the RAID0 setup. ;-)

While true, there is no data recovery option available. At least with a dying / dead drive that wasn't in Raid 0 configuration, you at least have some chance you can recover some data from it. Lo. |

2004-07-21 09:36:00 | Good point, which is why you shouldn't store crucial data on a RAID0 array without a backup. I personally have no problems using RAID0 for gaming or vid editing as loss of data is not going to leave me financially ruined or throw me into the depths of depression. I'll just reinstall my software and away we go. :-) | Sb0h (3744) | |
2004-07-21 12:42:00 | $452 for da ram eh? they better be bh-5 or u r getting ripped : ) ...but bh-5 is kinda hard to find now .... maybe u should ring them and find out ..... if it's not bh-5 then it is most likely ch-5 ...and that's a hell lot of money to pay for ch-5... u can get it for like 300 bux
