253311 2004-07-18 21:33:00 I take it this is a gaming system? I would consider ditching the Viewsonic and getting the Samsung Syncmaster 172x. The response time is 12ms and it's an excellent LCD. Sb0h (3744)
253312 2004-07-18 22:39:00 looks quite nice :)

i would go for amd64 if you can.
you could save a few $$$ by dropping XPpro for XPhome, i suspect your not going to be connected to a corporate lan so theres no real advandage of getting XPpro.

I would have thought you would like a TNT2 card? This will save you money will it not?

In a previous post you advised a person to get one of those over a Radeon 9800XT.

Now while I don't use either video card I know which of the two I would pick and it ain't the TNT2.

YMMV. :-)

253314 2004-07-19 04:46:00 I'm getting OEM version of Pro. And the TNT2 thing was quite obviously a joke ;) Wilky (776)

Sure the 2500+ has only a 333Mhz FSB but many, many people have found that you can turn it into a 3200+ by simply upping the FSB to 400mhz and giving it a bit more vcore. Then you have practically the same chip for less. Sure you have to have some good RAM and motherboard to do it, but it saves you a good $200 if it works. The 3200s are way overpriced.

Get some nice RAM e.g CL2-2-2, or get some DDR500 then you can tighten the timings yourself when running only at 400Mhz. Bit more expensive but lower timings make the PC seem just that bit quicker.

Look at the Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe (www.asus.com) it's a better board than the Pro2 one and you should get better performance out of it. I've got the Pro2 and it seems to be holding back a bit on benchmarks where I should be getting better performance. Not to sure about the overclocking options, Growly could tell you that. Other advantage is the sound chip on there which is comparable to the Audigy 2 you are buying, so you could save even more money there.

But seriously if you've got $5000 to spend in a few months, I'd be looking at a dual Xeon or something rather than this last year system.

falk out the xtra for an fx 53

I know a guy that got a 22" CRT from ascent and its is soooooooooooo COOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL! the contrast is amazing

> Logitech MX510: $108 ascent.co.nz
> Logitech Elite Keyboard: $96 ascent.co.nz
go for the cordless MX duro from ascent

go for the Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe m/b it really looks better than the pro 2.

Scrap these! $886! Thats the biggest rip in the universe you might as well buy a cheep SATA drive and get an AMD FX-53.

Opteron kicks Xeon butt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111one,one

253317 2004-07-19 06:52:00 For $395 I would get a A64 3200+ instead, this chip is way faster ...and of course that would mean you have to a new Nforce 3 motherboard too...but they r not that expensive anyway....

Ignore the guy who told you to get an FX-53 unless u r will to pay $1000 more than what you are paying now.

Also, 2 WD Raptors in raid 0 would be fast as!! so I dunno what that guy is on about ....

Anyway, GL with ur rig!!

O, one more thing ..if it was up to me..I would get the 6800 Ultra rather than the X800XT ....differences maybe slight ...but I believe the 6800 Ultra is a tad faster in most games and benchmarks...and of course it has new technologies such as (SM 3.0) rather than 2.0 in the X800 :)

And pay $1000 more? Hahah, no thanks.

I've used both, and prefer pro for the higher level of control over user accounts. It's OEM anyway, so it isn't that expensive.

I don't have enough room for a CRT.

Hell no. 2 reasons. I hate wireless. Batteries, lesser responsiveness, a 3 year old brother, and the fact that the MX510 is better than the MX500/MX700. Higher refresh rate= more precision.

.....lol. The Raptors are 10000rpm dude. They are great for gaming. I posted these specs on a gaming forum and a guy said that out of all the components of this computer, he would pick these. His loading times in UT2004 are unsurpassed.

253319 2004-07-19 08:47:00 Hmm, after a bit of looking around I'll probably get the AMD Athlon 64 after all, I'll get a motherboard with better onboard sound, and I'll not get the Audigy 2. I'll also look at other monitors. I'd like lots of user input here on what type of 17" LCD monitor is the best for gaming and has good colour, contrast, image quality, etc. And it has to be less than $1000.

And what's a good mobo to get for the Athlon 64? It needs good onboard sound, and gigabit LAN, dual channel, etc.

253320 2004-07-19 08:57:00 Looking for an LCD for a gaming system then you better take a look at the Samsung Syncmaster 172x it is awesome. Just a shade over $1k though...but only by a few dollars. It has a response time of 12ms and the colours are very good. You do have to set the colour up to get the best results, but the supplied software makes it nice and easy. Make sure you use the DVI connection though....be a bit silly not to.

That's my $0.02 take it or leave it :D
