253597 2004-07-19 23:03:00 I'm running an infrastructure wireless network using a US Robotics ADSL Modem/Router/Access Point, a laptop and desktop PC both running XP Home. Generally it works well, but occasionally the connection gets 'dropped' even though signal strength is good (I can be using the laptop close to the access point). This means I can't rely on editing a desktop file via the laptop - I did it once, the network 'dropped' and I lost the file. Is this inevitable with wireless networks, what's causing it, is there anything I can do to ensure the network is more 'robust'?

Thanks

253598 2004-07-20 01:15:00 To be honest I don't quite know, but the same thing happened to me with an ad-hoc network when I selected the lower channels (1,2,3,4).

Ensure there are no microwaves, cordless phones etc in the vicinity as this will definately cause poor operation as they use the same band.

Google is your friend as has a wealth of information on this.

Hope this helps

253599 2004-07-20 02:07:00 Setup the connection manually, do not rely on Windows Zero Config because chances are that that's your problem whetu (237)
253600 2004-07-20 05:15:00 I have a Linksys WAG54G ADSL gateway with the laptop the only device connecting by wireless and have a drop of the connection. I am unsure why and haven't played with the channels yet. One thing I am sure of is it is the Gateway causing the prob. If I restart the gateway the connection returns. I am using the configuration utility that came with the wireless card. I would suggest you determine if it is the card or router that is causing the drop and maybe change the channel. I will one day get around to playing with the channels but this prob hasn't affected me greatly yet. I normally have the connection drop and come straight back on. Only once have I had it drop and not reconnect. That time required the gateway to be restarted. Strength is always excellent when this happens.

253602 2004-07-21 10:25:00 Thanks for the advice.

Seemed to have got a stable network connection after changing the channel from 1 to 10. Don't know why, but it works!

253603 2004-07-21 10:29:00 Other devices in the area? Neighbours? Growly (6)
253604 2004-07-21 10:30:00 That's good news. It sounds as though you may have had interference from another 2.4Ghz device if that is the case. Possibly a neighbour. A techie told me there was no point in shifting one or two numbers in trying to find a clear channel - he said to go to either 1 or 10. Great.
