253539 2004-07-19 09:57:00 I'm off to a trade exhibition in Oz at the end of the week and I don't trust my IR - cellphone link for getting my email each day. Can anyone recommend an ISP in Aussie and how do I go about setting up an account when I don't have an address to give them on their online forms? I expect to be in Oz every couple of months or so for a week or so at a time, internet usage will be light, so a cheap dialup plan and pay as you go would be good. Anybody done this?

Cheers

253540 2004-07-19 10:12:00 Why not just use an internet cafe and your ISP's webmail system to access your emails? Jen C (20)
253541 2004-07-19 10:38:00 Or use Global Roaming if your ISP offers it.

Or try visiting an electronics store and getting a pre-paid internet card thing if they have them.

It's hardly worth signing up for an ISP account over there.

Though that would cost $$$.

253543 2004-07-19 10:59:00 JenC, yes I could go to an internet cafe but as I'm going to be working long hours at the exhibition I'd rather just use my laptop and dial in somewhere, maybe the apartments I'm staying at will have a connection of some kind?

Thanks, WTF I'm going to look into the global roaming thing, that is something I was not aware of and sounds like a very good idea. As this will be for a company and we will be over there fairly regularly I'd like something reliable and cost effective. I have tried to get the damn GPRS thing to work but it never seems to quite work properly and it's expensive...always seems to take longer to set up and connect than I spend online. ;-)

Wireless is definately something I'm looking into for the future...the next laptop I get will surely have built in WIFI. Once we're multinational the cost shouldn't be such an issue, thanks Growly.

253544 2004-07-19 12:11:00 I use global roaming in Australia.
The software is provided by my ISP (Xtra) for download, and all costs appear on the ISP bill.

It uses a local host ISP, and is $10 or $12 per hour, plus any call costs from a hotel (usually about 40c per call).

For quick access I use my cellphone via IR and make a direct toll call back to NZ, it costs about $1 - $2 to download the text only portions of the email to my hand-held.

This makes sense to me generally speaking.

What happens if I have a Laptop and take it to Australia.
I decide whilst anywhere to change files on the Laptop and my Wife changes the same files on the Desktop while I am away.

I get back and who has the most recent update?

Synch comes to mind here.
