253455 2004-07-20 06:54:00 Is there seriously no way to fix this issue :( csinclair83 (200)
253456 2004-07-20 07:06:00 I think we have dragged to the bottom of the barrel here .

Its an issue with the way the game is written buy the sound of it .

If it cannot find a MIDI device it likes, it will not go any further . End of story .

Nothing that we can suggest can change that behaviour .

In a desktop, fitting a suitable sound card could perhaps often get around it .

But you have a laptop .

What else can we do?

253457 2004-07-20 07:14:00 hmm true but is there anything like disabling it or download from the net? as if there isnt, i mite just pass the game on csinclair83 (200)

Disabling what though?
The game coding is on the CD .
How can you disable the code to allow the game to run without the MIDI hardware, without the full source code from the author and the required programming tools, thats the problem . Otherwise every time the code calls the MIDI routines throughout the game it would again fail .

> or download from the net? as if there isnt, i mite just pass the game on

Download what from the net?

If you mean a "patch", I would have assumed that you have exhausted that avenue by now?

The game is apparently quite old, that may mean no patches were ever written (or needed) as probably running it on a laptop is not a common event historically .

Do the company still exist that published the game, and if so have you asked them?

Have you seen this?

I am not suggesting its a cure, but as you have not actually said where you have been, here it is .

Hi
To install this one you'll need to use the subst command that is mentioned on the FAQ page . (Otherwise known around here as "Hartmann's Multi-Purpose Multi-Disk Suggestion (tm)"

Unzip the download to a directory of your choice, but it's best if the directory name is no longer than 8 characters .

Go to the DOS prompt (MS-DOS prompt in Windows is fine) and type:

subst a: c:\WhateverDirectoryYouUnzippedTheFilesIn

Change to the directory you have the game files in by typing:

CD\WhateverDirectoryYouUnzippedTheFilesIn
and run INSTALL . EXE
Don't try to use the setup . exe, it will not find the files .

After installation is complete, be sure to remove the drive substitution by typing:

subst a: /d

The installation creates a directory called c:\Tlc\ssg and puts all the the files you need in it . Run SSG . BAT to start the game .

Have fun! :)

If you follow the step-by-step and you don't have sound, first check to see if your speakers are turned on . ;-)

See if sound is enabled-- start the game and enter a building . Click on the "Options" menu at the top of the game window and then click on Sound & Music .

If you still have no sound, there are a couple of command line perimeters you can try .
Quit the game and go to the DOS prompt (MS-DOS in Windows is fine) and change to the game directory by typing:

cd \tlc\ssg (enter)
While in the directory you can try these different switches:

si for the PC Speaker
sb for Sound Blaster
sm for Microsoft Sound System
sn for sound off
For example, to try with Sound Blaster, you'd type:

ssg -sb (enter)

I'm not sure which one is the default, so give both the Sound Blaster & Microsoft Sound a try . Hopefully, your soundcard will emulate one of them .
