253676 2004-07-20 03:40:00 I purchased the Upgrade version Windows XP Home Edition as a licensed user of Windows 98SE. All went great except that it takes betwen 30 and 35 seconds before Outlook Express becomes available for use. Anyone with any suggestions?

253677 2004-07-20 04:11:00 What version of OE and IE are you using?

Have you disabled either Windows Meassaging or MSN? Doing so can cause OE to slow down.

253678 2004-07-20 05:04:00 I fail to see how knowing the version of OE or IE is going to help to any great extent.
It seems to be a common first response by some people (not you Murray) and I suspect it is because they have no information that is of any use but makes them feel they have contributed.

Have a look here, it has the MSN problem mentioned by Murray but some other ideas as well.

253679 2004-07-20 05:17:00 Hi Jim .

There is another issue, which I happened on while checking the WM/MSN one, that has to do with 5 . 5 which apparently requires IE (along with) OE to be surgically removed and IE 6 installed and a further registry hack . I didn't want to get into it if it wasn't necessary (surgery), have enough trouble looking after myself without getting someone else in the mire . Help at hand though .

253682 2004-07-20 06:25:00 Thank you Rob but what do you mean by:

"Turn off if it is on the contacts pannel
And get the two scripts to disable and reenable messenger found in the third method "

I've looked at the third method but it makes no sense to me.

Thanks for trying in any case.

A lot of the tips I read were for I E V 5.5 and also for Windows 98.

253683 2004-07-20 13:53:00 If you have your contacts showing when you load OE turn them off.

Click this (www.dougknox.com) to download the first script (save to My Documents) then click here (www.dougknox.com) to get the undo script and save to the same location.

Now goto My Documents and double click on the xp_messenger_autorun file.

Reboot your computer

Now try Outlook Express, is it any better?

note: if you want to reverse the change just run the other script.

I am very grateful.

Kind regards

253685 2004-07-22 09:43:00 Just an update R. This morning my O E is now back to normal and it responds within about 1 or 2 seconds. Just great. Thank you again for your help.

Kindest regards
