253651 2004-07-20 01:22:00 Hi. Just building a PC from old fragments and the thing won't boot for me to load the o/s. I got the mobo, case and cpu from afar, and using some of my own old components, eg graphics, hard drive etc that I already had. Each component worked fine before I assembled the new machine.

When I switch on, hardrive and psu run, but after that all that happens is a series of continuous long beeps. Monitor seems to be powered, but nothing appears on screen.

Hard drive is an old Quantum Bigfoot 4G, no idea what the mobo is. It's a slot1 with a P111 450

All connections are sound, and I've been specially carefully about earthing etc while working on it. I have various components that I can replace for trial and error purposes, but really i don't operate out of a workshop so am reluctant to go that drawn-out route.

I know my info above is vague, but I can't think at this moment of anything else that would be relevant. Some suggestions would be good to look into.

Thx!

Cool thx - that narrows it down to the things I can check. I am sure both pieces are solid, but maybe I need to put the ram into another slot, and iI have another old video card that I can try. (although I kinda doubt the probs here in video).

Thx

253655 2004-07-20 02:26:00 You can get the Motherboard manual from here:-

The MB manual will probably tell you what error those beeps denote. If not check on the Bios makers site.

253657 2004-07-20 05:27:00 Things I would check:

Ram is SD-RAM PC100, as the P3 450 chip runs on a 100MHZ bus. (PC66 will fail).

Motherboard Jumper is set to 100MHZ, not 66MHZ (if this is a jumper setting)

Your AGP Card is compatible with the Motherboard, i.e AGP x2, x4 and x8 may not work...

Feedback: Thanks Murray - spot on, I sub'd a ram chip from my PC and hey presto it worked.

The beauty of this result is that Missus is gonna take my 512 megs sdram and gonna buy me 512 ddr which woulda cost the same as a lousy 256 sdram, means we both score!
