thanks

254099 2004-07-21 08:08:00 AMD64 cos of 64Bit P4 only 32Bit and when the new games come out *like realy realy realy new* they will support 64Bit code and it can do 32 Bit at very fast speeds Gods-Hitman (1419)
254100 2004-07-21 08:16:00 And by the time the 64 bit games are out, those CPU's will both be really really really slow in comparison with what is available at that time. godfather (25)
254101 2004-07-21 08:36:00 Yea I guess so... but it still can do 32Bit jobs very "fasty" and btw if you go for a 64Bit CPU you need the windows that supports 64Bit CPU's Gods-Hitman (1419)
254102 2004-07-21 08:37:00 Was reading an article the other day in which it said for gaming the AMD was better but for some other 32bit applications (sorry can't remember which) the Pentiom was better. If you also run Linux you can run a true 64bit OS with the AMD. mikebartnz (21)
254103 2004-07-21 08:43:00 What godfather says is true. By the time 64bit is being used these will be outdated, hence I don't see a point in them.

However, from the tests I've seen (they are only tests, bear in mind):

Multimedia = AMD64
Maths grunt = P4

254104 2004-07-21 09:11:00 The AMD Athlon 64 3400+ by far.

Why? It has a 1MB cache, it's 64bit, has much better architecture than the P4, and although clocked lower, is still faster.

254105 2004-07-21 09:33:00 Oh dear the old Intel Vs AMD debate again.

It depends entirely on what you want your system to do, the P4 is better suited to certain applications and the Athlon others. For a gaming machine you'd get better performance for your money with an AMD processor, for video editing you'd be better off with a P4, for word processing etc they both will perform well. The best thing you can do is decide what you will be doing with your system and then look for reviews and benchmarks for that task to see which takes top prize.

FWIW the Prescott P4 also has a 1MB cache.

In the future 64 bit computing will be the way to go, but as gf said by the time 64 bit computing takes off today's processors will be worthless. Don't expect 64 bit programming to be here tomorrow, as in the cheese ad "good things take time".

254106 2004-07-21 09:36:00 I'm getting a bit fed up with these "What's the best" queries.
The best computer is the one that does all you want it to do at the lowest price.
