It depends entirely on what you want your system to do, the P4 is better suited to certain applications and the Athlon others. For a gaming machine you'd get better performance for your money with an AMD processor, for video editing you'd be better off with a P4, for word processing etc they both will perform well. The best thing you can do is decide what you will be doing with your system and then look for reviews and benchmarks for that task to see which takes top prize. FWIW the Prescott P4 also has a 1MB cache. In the future 64 bit computing will be the way to go, but as gf said by the time 64 bit computing takes off today's processors will be worthless. Don't expect 64 bit programming to be here tomorrow, as in the cheese ad "good things take time". |
