254027 2004-07-22 00:58:00 It is possible to buy quieter fans at quite reasonable prices now, this may be your most cost effective solution. R2x1 (4628)
254028 2004-07-22 02:59:00 Indeed, even another 2nd hand fan without so much wear may quieten down the racket by a large margin. metla (154)
254029 2004-07-22 04:14:00 the solution at this time is to cut a hole in the top of the power suppily and point a 6 inch fan at it :-)

the system is getting a change to a custom "case" that will let me have a layout that pill put the power suppily about 4 inchs from the CPU.

the CPU is getting a masive heat sink with no fan.

the full setup will then have the 6 inch fan pushing air down over the whole thing.

so we have one big slow fan replacing two small fast fans.

254030 2004-07-22 04:29:00 I would say that is a dangerous thing to do.
Not all the air from a 6" fan will go through the psu and past the heatsinks.

Forced convection heat transfer is approximately proportional to the air velocity over the heat sink. The velocity with a 6" fan will be lower than with the psu fan which is a similar size to the PSU case, so you may run the risk of burning out the power transistors and diodes.

254031 2004-07-22 05:44:00 I know this may sound a little dumb,
but have you tried a drop of oil in the fans bearing/axle thingie
(I think there was a post or FAQ about this ages ago), I know a couple of people who have done this on older systems and it quietens them down a bit although I'm not sure if it is the PSU Fan they were oiling

254032 2004-07-22 06:29:00 the oil thing came up just a few days ago, it had very little effect on the fans of this system.

i know that the idea of fan removal sounds very bad but remember that this is only an old k6II300 system its not a 2.6GHz athlon.

i will keep a close eye on the temp over the first few days.

254033 2004-07-22 06:36:00 you shouldn't have much problems with the fan setup your planning. a lot of OEM's have the same fan setup. only thing to watch is you don't get hot air coming out of the psu and back into the "case". tweak'e (174)
254034 2004-07-22 07:45:00 Thanks very much Billy T - that clears it up a bit :D

Mmmmm 2.6 Ghz Athlon

254035 2004-07-22 07:58:00 so far so good . . . . . . . .

next step is to make the hard drive quite . . . . .

maybe if i open it up and fill it with oil?? :-)

the best solution so far looks like getting a 512Mb or 1GB CompactFlash card and a CF to IDE adaptor . . . . . .

then i have to fit linux and apache and mysql in to 512Mb . . . . .

254036 2004-07-22 13:16:00 just out of interest, if you turn the psu fan around so its sucking cool air staight in, instead of the computer cases air, and then suck it out again with a blowhole on the inside, would that cool the psu better? willie_M (5608)
