254350 2004-07-22 13:39:00 I have just noticed that the fan on my laptop has been going flat-out and for no real reason, and sure enough, a quick peek at the Windows task manager shows the CPU usage at 100%. I have my suspicions about the services running, specifically svchost.exe which has 4 entries one very large one at 19354K.

The freakiest thing about all of this is that I decided to do a full reformat, but it still sits at 100%!
I even disabled all of the processes but no change.

Also, it hangs on shutdown everytime.

Has anyone ever had this experience, how do I fix this?

254351 2004-07-22 18:52:00 Are you sure your suspicious entry is svchost, which is part of the Windows system, and not scvhost (2nd & 3rd letters transposed), which is a worm that could have taken over some of your running processes?
What virus & spyware checking have you done?
And what is your OS?

254352 2004-07-22 23:11:00 There are a number of services that could be running in the background . You can find out more at the Black Viper ( . blackviper . com/WinXP/servicecfg . htm" target="_blank">www . blackviper . com) website (don't be put off by the name) . One service in particular that can be turned off is the Indexing Service which is supposed to run when the computer is idle .

I am wondering if your computer is trying to get its updates - is it online when it starts going "flat out"?

254353 2004-07-23 04:23:00 Problem fixed!

I'm still not sure what caused it in the first place . . did spyware, registry and antivirus checks which produced errors, spyware etc and fixed the problems, but still it ran at 100% .

Then I decided to go to the hp website and scan through the knowledgebases and came across a BIOS flashing utility which I read may help, so I downloaded that, ran it at startup and sure enough, fixed the problem .

It may well have had something to do with the svc/scvhost changing something in the BIOS, I don't know, but its fixed now, Cheers .
