| 254503 | 2004-07-23 05:11:00 | A friend of mine just rang me that he got a problem with his machine running XP Pro. When I launches IE, the machine shuts down. Otherwise, everything is just fine. Is this a sympton of virus infection or just IE problem? Cheers |

Crystal ball and all, its just not working.... If you think its a virus, what is the (updated) virus checker reporting? AdAware and Spybot should be run as well. If you suspect a corrupted windows file, run SFC |

The process will take several minutes, and you may need the XP CD (unless it was a pre-install) in the process. If nothing "happens" then you have incorrectly entered the command in the Run window. A dialogue box with the progress should be seen. That checks all the .dll files and replaces any that are corrupt. If that fails try installing SP1, that should refresh the files as well. But do an on-line scan at Trend Housecall first for viruses |

I'm not sure that I do and am afraid to start A complete reinstall, again . It does not actually seem to mention just repairing XP . Am I missing something? As always - help appreciated . |

| 254511 | 2004-07-23 09:32:00 | This depends on your version of XP and whether you now have the original XP disk installed. You may have updated to Win SP1 or even Win SP2. sfc /scannow may well ask for the original CD but if you have a "restore" disk you may have a problem. Scouse you need to type in the "sfc /scannow" before you will be asked for the CD. If you just put in the CD then you will get the option to install again. Don't do this. Go Start, Run, sfc /scannow and press enter. If some files are corrupt, missing or changed then you will be prompted then to insert the CD. Don't just put the CD in without a prompt. |
