254237 2004-07-22 08:37:00 Hello,

I've decided to run RAID 0, but don't trust my on board chip. Also, I will be getting a new SATA HDD soon, so I need a new controller.

My question is, which is the best to buy?

What are your (if any) experiences?

My budget is around $200.

I have looked at Ascent, and although I see one there that will suit me, I am unsure of its abilities. Also, if anyone else has tried any others that aren't listed, I could go looking for them.

Thanks very much.

254238 2004-07-22 10:53:00 How many channels do you want/need? Why dont you trust your onboard SATA? For $200 you could easily get a nice 2 channel Adaptec, Promise or Highpoint controller. Ive recently brought a LSI MegaRAID controller although only PATA im very impressed with LSI. I found it to be a good combination of price and quality, might be worth having a look at their SATA products. Pete O'Neil (250)
254239 2004-07-23 06:36:00 Thanks,

I don't trust my onboard controller because the drivers are not the best - last time my disks corrupted :s

However, I am also using both channels anyway - so need a new one regardless.

I was looking at a 4 channel card, (just incase). I've seen the LSI MegaRAID cards in action (specifically the 6 Channel 64bit PCI-X model, and they are awesome, but are expensive)

Thanks very much.

254240 2004-07-23 08:55:00 i like promise controllers myself. tho there not the cheapest.

one thing to watch with raid card bios and drivers is with some makes/models you need to format reinstall if you upgrade the driver/bios otherwise you can corrupt the data on the drive.
