255053 2004-07-24 07:43:00 Is it possible to host/use ASP.NET stuff on Windows 95 using PWS or something?

Trying to use an old computer as a server.

255054 2004-07-24 08:14:00 I don't think it'll be possible using PWS; PWS is a cut down version of IIS, and as such, from my own experience, it has large limitations, one of those being that you cannot add extra application mappings (so as to be able to host ASP.NET, PHP, or any other server-side scripts).

Unless you up end and move to Windows NT 4 (or newer, of course), or another OS, you'd be better off looking at a different web server and a new server-side script language.

Or stay with classic ASP (which, speaking from experience again, really isn't that bad).

255055 2004-07-24 10:07:00 Its just that I bought an ASP.NET book this week.

Is there some way I can upgrade it to IIS? Copy it off my XP cd or something?

I wish linux supported it.

255056 2004-07-24 10:18:00 Ok, I just found out you can do ASP.NET on Linux.

Looks like I will go to linux then.

I guess it will be whatever I can download from Jetstream games.

What linux do you recomend downloading from jetstream games?

I want to use it mostly as a server to host files, backups, ASP.NET and PHP.

300mhz
128mb ram
4mb graphics card
20gb harddrive

Easy to use would be nice, but if its quite hard to set up, but really good I don't mind too much. Good learning.

Also, I don't know how to download linux from jetstream games. I can download any .iso all right, but I had a look at things like debian, and it had millions of folders and files all over the place, or something.

255058 2004-07-24 22:30:00 Seeing as you also want to host files and backups (or is that do backups, but it doesn't really matter anyway) on your server, I'd suggest downloading Fedora and customising the installation (there should be a group of packages under the 'Server' category which you'll want to look at).

It'd probably be unnecessary and useless to install KDE or Gnome though, so choose a different window manager, if you want one at all.
