255033 2004-07-24 06:59:00 For anyone interested, you can get try the new version (5) of windows update at http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

I've tried myself, and found it to be way better. It's much faster figuring out which updates to give you, is clever enough not to give you two updates if one is newer and makes the other void, has proper resume capabilities etc. Much much better :)

255034 2004-07-25 09:00:00 On the basis of my experience, I would suggest caution before downloading and installing this version of Windows update.

I tried it, and it gave me access to Win XP Service Pack 2 as outlined in this months NZ PC World.

It proceeded to download the 97MB whilst I was having dinner. When I got back to the computer it was showing the "Updates did not install" dialogue box. I checked the Installation history, and it showed it had only downloaded 88MB. I tried to get the rest, but IE locked up and I had to force quit.

Now I can't even get that far - when I try to use Windows Update, it just freezes and I have to force quit again. I can't see any way to revert to version 4 of the update software.

I am a grumpy camper...

255035 2004-07-25 09:23:00 Well I have just gone to the site suggested with Win98SE and IE6SP1 and found that there is no change from what I am used to, and there was no updates for me to instal and also no new installer, what changes have I missed? zqwerty (97)

255037 2004-07-25 09:57:00 97 Mb????!!!!! For those who do not have broadband, can this update be sent by MS via the post? I seem to recall reading this in PCWorld or elsewhere but perhaps it was only for XP SP1. ?? Steve_L (763)
255038 2004-07-25 10:26:00 Ok, very funny, but I don't understand the point of this post. I normally use Wn2KPro and so it updates automatically on the internet with no help from me. Every now and again I might go to MS update site just to see that all is well. When I went this time I decided to use Win98SE expecting a new interface or something but it is just the same as always. zqwerty (97)
255039 2004-07-25 10:58:00 The current ed of NZ PC World gives you an 0800 number to phone Microsoft to get a CD sent to you. Stupidly I couldn't wait. Sigh... John H (8)

255042 2004-07-25 21:23:00 What's the point? Well first of all, I have WinXP SP1, and it did NOT give me access to sp2. Second, nice to see what the new one is like... for me it's a heck of a lot faster, so I won't be going back. Third, it gives you a new automatic update system... whether the new goes further than the pretty new icons, I don't know :P Second... from what I've heard, sp2 is going to be a _LOT_ bigger that a measly 97MB.
