2004-07-23 21:12:00 | Probably a stupid question, but will an 8x AGP card like a geforce 6800 run in a 4x slot? | SpiderVenom (1412) | |
2004-07-23 21:22:00 | yes it will but only at the 4x speed | dipstick01 (445) | |
2004-07-23 21:59:00 | By running a 6800 at 4x, you are effectively nulling the reason you got - the performance will be somewhat... crap... | Growly (6) | |

2004-07-23 23:10:00 | OK so crap was an exaggeration. But my point stands (:p): The 6800 is designed to be able to pump data at 8x. It has a much faster processor and can handle a huge bandwidth. By running it at 4x, you will notice a huge increase in performance, but your card can still perform at a MUCH higher rate. The same choking will happen if you use low end processors. (Basically, you are running a beast like a puppy.)

2004-07-23 23:32:00 | just had a quick look at a few reveiws and a couple of things come to mind.... anyone with a fast enough cpu to warrant a gf6800 will most likly have a 8xAGP and it will need one big psu to run it all. with only a 4xAGP i would suspect the cpu and ram proberly won't be fast enough to keep up with the card anyway reguardless of 4x or 8x. can't really tell without know the full specs of the pc :(

Heavy handed statement there Growly,The performance will take a tiny minuscle hit,Held back more likely as Tweak suggested by the rest of the system. Put a 6800 in anything and the performance will be steller,Not crap as you state. |

2004-07-24 00:16:00 | Well, I have a Pentium 2.4B (2.4GHz, 533MHz FSB), with an radeon 9500 pro. I know even the base 6800 is probably overkill, I just need more grunt with Far Cry. I've made tests with overclocking, and found that far cry's performance seems to be almost totally hindered by the GPU (that is, ocing the gpu makes a massive difference (still too slow though), while shoving the CPU right up does, well, nothing). I was under the impression that while it would take a small hit from 4x only, the effect would only be miniscule, as metla said... much like 256MB gpu ram over 128MB. If this upgrade would be totally worthless, please say so though. Thanks :) | SpiderVenom (1412) | |
2004-07-24 00:31:00 | I would consider it a killer upgrade, though depending on what model card you get you may have to upgrade your PSU as well. How much system ram do you have?,From what i've read on the subject Farcry loves a lot of ram.(but loves a uber video card even more)
