254687 2004-07-23 12:00:00 Hi..As a result of going up from my ancient Celeron 333 to a Pentium 3.00GHz I'm back to basics again. And muttering to myself a lot.
For instance I wanted to clear out some stuff that loads at startup but good old msconfig refuses to play ball. I uncheck say Winzip and Winamp, check Normal Start, apply, and restart. Every time the result is no result. They stay put.
I get to msconfig by way of "run" .
I seem to remember reading here to try doing this from safe mode but more frustration...this machine goes thru the startup so fast that no matter when I hold down the F8 key the start just finishes normally.
I can get to the command prompt thru the start menu and remember enough dos to change directory to c:\ but I don't know the file name for safe mode.
This must be something so basic that I can't see it. Can I slow down the first few seconds of the start somehow? Mutter mutter..Ken

254688 2004-07-23 12:13:00 Do not use MSconfig
Read here:

You cant get to safe mode from the XP DOS prompt.

XP does not actually have DOS, just a DOS emulator under Windows.

F8 should work, tap it twice per second from the moment you power it up until you get the safe mode prompt. Only caveat is that if you use a USB keyboard perhaps its not recognised until too late. Use a PS2 keyboard in this case.

WinZip is not needed so you could uninstall it. XP has zip and unzip built into Windows Explorer.

254689 2004-07-23 12:17:00 services and start-up items are 2 seperate items under msconfig, disabling startup items with msconfig is fine.

Now,lets see if i have put my foot in it this time.]:)

254690 2004-07-23 12:27:00 Thanks folks...That should do the job. I'll get some sleep and report back tomorrow....Ken paradox (1082)
254691 2004-07-24 02:12:00 I prefer to disable programs from starting at Startup by disabling that option from within the program itself whenever possible. The option is normally found within the program's Tools, Preferences menu. I normally only use msconfig when there is no option to disable startup from the Preferences menu. tommy (2826)
254692 2004-07-25 10:31:00 Thanks for the replies folks...I've got rid of the unwanted startups.

Godfather, the multi tap tecnique worked fine and I'm real pleased to know about it because I'm bound to want to do that for other reasons too.

I got into safe mode and tried msconfic there but the result was just the same as through regular Windows. No joy.

Tommy, In the end I fixed my problem by following your suggestion and looked around for references to "start" in Preferences and that was that.

Good old PF1 and Co.....Ken.

254693 2004-07-25 20:07:00 msconfig works perfectly well in windowsXP however you did say that you 'uncheck x,y,z apps' then 'check normal start' .......well by tickign 'normal start' you are UNdoing what you've just done.......just untick whatever you dont want to start then clik 'apply and ok' and leave it at that...........the msconfig box tells you itself on the 'general' tab .........'normal startup = loads ALL device drivers and services' drcspy (146)
254694 2004-07-26 11:49:00 Thank drcspy...I'll try your suggestion next time I need to alter startups. Ken paradox (1082)

Well you asked so I guess I have to tell you.
Try using the word separate instead of "seperate".
